009 Catalogues

Post by bunji »

A number of people have spoken to me recently, mentioning that the catalogues available for 009 locos have no pictures. In this thread, I'm going to try and rectify this! I've tried to include pictures of the models wherever possible, but I may resort to real life photos of drawing if nothing can be found.

Nice work there Ben and thanks for taking the time. It really is frustrating to just be given a catalogue description when you are shopping for OO9 stuff.

I'm going to make this a sticky as it will be a useful resource

Brilliant, Ben are some of them yours, then? Beautifully finished!

Can I just add that the T&D 2-6-0T and the Engarth are actually HOe (3.5mm Scale), I don't think Chivers are making it any longer, but there is a rtr version due out soon!

I wish! I've only got one 009 loco - Prince. I just sourced them from wherever I could. Re the HOe thing, who's making the RTR? Which locos are due for conversion to RTR? Thanks for the comments everyone - I'm going to continue updating this with more manufacturers and better pictures. Some gaps need filling too!

If its up to the standard of the HF110C then for £135 it'll be worth it, though as i model German NG I won't be getting one! The Bemo RTR stuff can be over £200!

BEMO stuff is of excellent quality but look at this:

Sure, it's a nice little diesel, but I wouldn't pay 115 quid for it.

I wouldn't either, but I would pay £100 for it - the quality is excellent and it won't lose its value, unlike Standard Gauge RTR stuff.

The thing to bear in mind is that you can't do a direct comparison with Standard Gauge RTR, or even the Bachmann US 0n30 stuff - the market for SG and the 0n30 is massively bigger than the market for German or French NG stock. It follows therefore that because the production runs will be smaller, but the costs of tooling, etc, the same, the cost will inevitably be higher.

The stuff produced by Roco, Bemo and Lilliput are really good and the prices not that high for the quality you are getting. There are still bargains to be had, I picked up the HF110C tender 0-6-0 from Roco off ebay for £82 and recently bought the Lilliput 1-B-1 diesel in German NG colours for £68 from, of all places, Hattons!

In fact Ebay can be a treasure trove of stock if you are careful, a Tillig/Bemo Spreedbahn 0-6-0T and three coaches in HOe for £55, anyone!

Wow - thanks for taking the time to do this

Will probably get this one as its the same model as Hafan off the P&H - it just needs the cab changing.

I am thinking of mounting it on the Backwood miniatures bagnall chassis - anyone know if this is any good?

Cheers

Tom, I've heard excellent reviews about Backwoods Miniatures stock - it's off great quality! I haven't heard anything about that chassis in particular, although I have seen it in action at an exhibition. It's a great smooth runner; can't remember much about the start-up reliability. However, I don't know if the loco I saw was using the same motor/gearbox as the sold example. There's also a lot of dependence on the controller used - a high quality one from KPC would greatly aid its running!

I'd also contact both Backwoods and Chivers before going ahead with the idea - the chassis may not be suitable for the kit without extensive modification.

This is the loco the chassis is designed for - very similar to the bagnall in question.

This is the chassis

Will probably need to be kitbashed a bit - otherwise will scratchbuild most of it and use the fittings

Hi all, this is a very interesting thread, and has certainly given me an idea about what some of the kits available actually should look like.

There are a couple of clarifications I would like to make though:

* The "Vale of Rheidol 2-6-2 (Original Type)" show is actually the Chivers kit for the later Swindon built Vale of Rheidol class engine (all three of which still run on that line today), the most obvious difference being that the original engines didn't have the bunkers that were wider than the tanks shown in that picture. I do have a model of the original type, and I may post a picture of it at some point, though I've liberated the Minitrix chassis for use on my model of Gowrie.

* The picture associated with "BALDWIN (Felin Hen) 2-6-2 " is actually of an ALCO locomotive.

* The "Beyer Garrett 0-4-0+0-4-0" shown is actually the beautiful Backwoods Miniatures 00-9 kit, currently priced £130, and very much on my shopping list. I'm not certain that the old Golden Arrow kit is available any more, though I do know that because it uses the Ibertren Cuckoo chassis that the look of the engine is somewhat compromised in the model (the engine units are far too long).
