We don't do much thatch in wet Mid Wales!!

Hi Kids,

Really had a terrible week at work which has left me rather down in the dumps, so I must count my lucky stars that at least I have a hobby that can take my mind off things in the real world & drift off into fantasy land. So back to these kits which I guess you've all picked up on I do really enjoy designing them & building the first Proto-types.

Are the thatched cottage roof, this one came about because I just couldn't get that first image out of my head & it felt right at the time, but you are quite right I'll stick another version up on the web very soon with the grey slate roof tiles, everyone can have a choice then.

Hi Glyn, as I promised I've now got the first proto-type built which looked great until I discovered a small issue when it came to fitting the canopy section on the small side buildings, they cover the door & window slightly so I just need to make the smaller buildings another 10mm taller. Did not notice this on the skethed drawing, issue comes when the roof is fitted it over hangs the building which then means the canopy has to be lower than I had thought.......Ooops

So just a little longer to wait & the next kit will be ready for up loading. Whilst we all wait here is the Proto-type being used at Wordsworth Station.




That's where we are at the moment, really not sure what I'm doing today but I would like to have a few hours working on Wordsworth I have a full village to design & plan.

Hi Kiddies,

I really tried my best to get motivated working on my own layout but just can't get that creative side going, so I did the next best thing which was to complete the modification to the small country station "Daisy" & alter the roof on Heather for a grey slate roof, so "Heather" now has a sister called "Hannah"

These have now been uploaded to my web site which is now getting full, might not be able to get many more up due too lack of space, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Once again I've not included any instructions because I feel these are so simple they are not required, & I've always found looking at the completed kits help more than words hence why I have included two small pic showing the front & rear elevations.

I hope everyone has fun with the two new girls joining the Wordsworth Range.

Hi Mike, thought you might like "Railway Terrace", your house backs popping their top floors and roofs above the parapet of a Scalescenes retaining wall.

It's mostly print and chop with a little bit of devious editing to get the bushes in front of the houses to show brickwork through the branches. It took three pieces of software and a few test prints to work out scaling to get the effect. The final print I did at 75% as I wanted to try to get the impression of the houses being set back from the boundary. The guy at the house in the middle is either a radio ham or running a minicab firm from home as he has an alloy pole and whip aerial sprouting from the back wall. Just a touch with a silver pen and a black fineline marker to hide the join. Hope you like.

Mike, I'm confused. I'm easily confused.
I'm constructing the railway station you recently uploaded.
There is a piece measuring 7cm long, 2cm wide and 3cm high excluding the flaps. Flaps at either end. Each side is the same, green door and window.
What is it, and where, dare I ask, should I stick it!

Hi Glyn,

It's not a silly question at all, I'll try an explain in in words (Which I'm not very good at) or if that fails I'll take a few snap shots which shows exactly what that piece is & then you'll go....."Ooh yes that's it....."

I believe the piece you are talking about is the inner passage way leading from the platform to the street side of the main center section of the station. It joins the two opening cut outs so you can see all the way through, but looks as if you has a door & a window to your left & right when walking through. Basically you cut this section out in one piece, then lightly score two lines at the point where the walls meet the ceiling, flip the piece back over & with the ceiling section on the bench fold the left & right walls upwards in a 90 degree angle, basically the pieces looks like a "U" shape.

Fold the piece flat again & lightly score the glue tabs, these then fold backwards at 90 degree to the walls & ceiling. You are now ready to glue this section between the front & rear wall of the center building forming the completed passage way.

I hope I made sense, if not do not fear just let me know & we'll have a bash at plan B using photo's taking you step by step.

By helping each other is the way we all learn new techniques.

I've knocked this small video together, didn't get into the loft for the last bit where the inner wall gets glued to the building but I've used some older photo's, hope you get the general idea from this.

If not I'll get some better pics showing how it gets glued to the model.

In the mean time have a little look at this slide show video.

After I'd created "Railway Terrace" from Mikes terraced houses backscene I wanted a second row of houses but receding away from the wall. Now before telling the world how I did it, I ran it past Mike as it involved reverse engineering his PDF to get an editable version of the image. The brute force crude way of proceeding would be to printout and re-scan the images, but my method is a little more sophisticated, some might even say devious. This is the finished result

The devious bit comes from knowing that the document management programme called Paperport (often given away with scanners and magazine cover disks) although now working with PDFs still supports its old proprietary form .MAX. This knows nothing of the controls put into Adobe Acrobat, so once you've re-saved the PDF in this form it's an open book.
From the .MAX file I saved each of the pages as .JPGs. Then I opened the image of the centre of the row in Paint Shop Pro, you could use Photoshop Elements, the GIMP almost any bitmap editor. I increase the canvas width of the centre image to just over three times its starting length and a bit taller than its height. Then I copied the image from the other two pages and pasted them into the centre one to end up with one long image representing the whole terrace. This is the point where it pays to save everything and shutdown all of the open bits apart from the new image.
It's easy in Paintshop Pro to create a perspective effect, first select what you want to apply the perspective to, then click on the corner handles whilst holding down CTRL or Shift. shift will allow you to move the corner handle in any direction, CTRL moves pairs of corners in synch. Each piece of software is going to have its own method of doing this but It shouldn't take much searching to work out what it is. Once you have squeezed one end or the other you may notice the nearer features look a bit fat. Do a rectangular select of the end of the image that looks fat and move it's end centre tab inwards. So you should have a perspective version of the face of the terrace, we need to add a perspective view of the end of terrace wall, for this I borrowed the gable end from the "Small house in aged brick" Copied and tacked on a section to make it taller then streched warped and squeezed it until it was the right shape for a gable end at an angle.
I'm sure it's possible to join these together in software, but along with the Adobe restrictions we threw away the information which relates pixels to real world dimensions. I cheated I opened a blank publication in my DTP software, inserted the two images and resized them so that the ends that have to join were the same size. If you have only an A4 printer, you'll need to print out the bits in two or three goes. I have an A3 printer and was able to juggle the terrace and the end wall to fit on an A3 sheet.
