NRM Single Line Terminus Challenge.

Post by headshot119 »

NRM Single Line Terminus Challenge.

Introduction:

Myself (Karl) and Piermaster (Dave) have decided to organise and run another NRM challenge, after the success of the last challenge I'm sure this one will be just as good. There will be a prize for the best layout if more than five people enter. Below I will outline the rules.

What it's all about:

In this challenge the idea is to created a terminus station that is served only by one track, although this sounds limited if you look further down the page Dave has compiled a large amount of images that you can use for inspiration. Don't forget , although the station can only have one track, it can look as if it used to have more, an example of this is Wrexham Central, it originally had two tracks but know only has one.

Rules:

1.The scenic board can be any size equal to or under 3' x 1'
2.The scenic area does not include any fiddle yard, cassette or traverser systems , although this can not be any longer than a three car DMU.
3.The layout can be from any era.
4.Any gauge can be used, (although I think you'll be pressed to do it in anything above 00.)
5.The layout can be based on any country, not just Britain.

Time scale:

The competition will begin officially at the beginning of April, and entries will need to be in to me before Midnight GMT on the 1st of June 2008.

Inspiration:

Here are some images compiled by Dave to give you inspiration, take a good look.

If you are interested:

If you are interested in entering can you please post here and I'll get Chris to add you to the entrants list. When you have finished your layout you can send a maximum of 5 images and 1 video clip under three minutes long to my email address @ karl@digitalattic.net , you must include your forum name, layout name, and the subject should be typed exactly as follows: NRM SLTC. This will save your entries getting lost in the wasteland of my email inbox, you will receive a conformation email confirming your entry within 48 hours of sending your message.

Judging:

Judging will be undertaken on a public board, thanks to Simon for allowing this. Please all entrants don't post any images of your layout until the closing date on the public forums.

Thank you:

A must take a moment to thank the following people for there contributions, firstly Dave, without who this competition would never have begun. Simon for allowing us to organise the challenge, and Chris for his advice and guidance on setting this all up.

There will be a choice between an 0-4-0 diesel (three wagons) and a 0-6-0 steam engine (two passenger coaches).

Thanks to saslord for the prizes.

For some additional inspiration: Harlingen Haven (=Harbour) in The Netherlands. The loop line is taken out of use, it was once used for fish wagons. But fish is nowadays transported by trucks. A short walk over the locks brings you to the seaside of Harlingen.

Could we have a smaller cash alternative?

I'll give it some thought.

Just for clarification (I'm easily confused), does this mean that the scenic area has to be no longer than a 3 car DMU in whatever scale you do it in? So in N, for example, this would make the scenic area about 18" long?

Or does the above restriction relate to the fiddle yard?

To clarify the fiddle yards are gauge specific, work out approximately how long a three car DMU is. That the maximum length of your fiddle yard, same for cassettes and traverses.

Woo! Count me in. However is it alright if i do it in n gauge?

Even though, come to think of it i can just buy a piece of 00 gauge track :D

Does a train have to be on the layout when the photos are taken?

You can do it in N-gauge and no a train doesn't have to be on it when photos/video are taken.
