Had another change of heart

I dont think the disused sidings will quite fit with the layout so...

Im going to purchase some knightwing security fencing to seperate the area from the tracks, buy one or two hornby buildings like the modern industrial unit of the office buildings and maybe put a car scrap yard next to it to create a small industrial estate. I think this is a more logical idea because it would fit in more with the modern town image

Im hoping to make some quic progress with that area and hope to get some pictures up soon b

if there the 2 sidings towards the back on the right hand side, why not turn it into a mini tmd, with a 2 road pikestuff engine shed and a knightwing fueling point, maybe even do it on a hard surfac and add some lights and it would look a dream,

maybe something like this: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic. ... &start=175 or even this: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6459

(scroll down for pictures of sengine shed a servicing points, or just look through the topic for more details)

I meant the unbuilt ones that were going to be located at the front of the layout :)

I like the idea of a TMD depot but with this being my first layout and the fact that i dont know what a tmd requires etc im just trying to keep things fairly simple

The layout isnt overly far away from completion, its just some things are taking far longer than they should because of my lack of initial planning leading to problems later on

I havent even started the fiddle yards at the ends of the layout but im just intending to put a few blank board with sidings on. I read the article in this months Model Rail but it didnt really shed any light on different ways of doing it so im going to stick to my easy way for this one

Bought in a Skaledale Bellamy's office building and a few packs of knightwin security fencing. Managed to finally decide on the layout so as to accomodate a car park for the office building. Hoping to get the fencing down and then get the office in place

Also got some more peco platform eding in. Ive fitted one platforms worth and need to do the other side. The one worry is that the platforms overlap onto the second board and with only some mounting card for the platform surface, im not sure when the boards push together that they will be level and im not sure as to a solution to it

Got my office building down along with some fencing

Im hoping to complete the fencing on wednesday hopefully

The area in which the portacabin sits will be the car sales lot. Im undecided as to whether to ballast the area or not. Its gonna mean a bit of mess and im not sure itll have the effect im thinking it might

Also, you can see in the distance of one of the pictures that some of the platform edging is down. About a quarter of that left to go then i can get some platform tops on and the whole thing will look a bit better

Im going to make a dummy conduit or two and have a few wires running from the signals and the AWS boxes in time

To be honest it was a bit of a mistake

I bought a pack of 5 paints from the range (2 black/3 white or vice versa) and mixed them together. I initially put too much black in because however much white i added it hardly changed. I wanted a lightish grey colour but when i eventually got this shade i thought it looked alright so i went with it :)

Had another rethink about my platforms

Im going to go for the metcalfe platform kits and doll them up a touch

Im going to use some red brick plasticard sheets on the edges to give it a bit more of a 3D effect. I may PVA the top of the platforms with fine ballast between the edging strips to give the same effect

Im actually quite surprised and pleased with how theyve turned out

If my alterations dont work out then i think im guite happy to use them as they are, maybe put a lick of grey paint on the top

Ive nearly constructed the basic kits and , with uni taking up monday and tuesday, I hope to get them finished and done up by Thursday, maybe friday, so i might put a few pics up here or in the scenery section if they look alright

Had to add two layers of card to the underneaths of my platforms. They sit a good cm or so below the doors of my trains so hopefully with the added height, and the detailing to go on the platform, it will be better when they get laid down

Im having a few problems deciding how to top my ASDA building. Its a bit uneven and i think im going to have put a layer of thin wood on the top to cover the gaps and redo the white panelling on the sides to bring it level

Ive glued my AWS boxes to near the main line and will run one or two wires from them to signals and along/under the tracks to add a bit of detail before going ahead with the ballast on one or two of the boards. Im going to use capri sun straws for the orange piping that goes under the tracks to run the wires through

Im planning to change the fencing around my two industrial faces to knightwing security fencing because i dont like the fencing thats in place now

Hopefully ill get a few more pics up to show my progress, pics are always a better indicator than words :)

Got one of the platforms down now with working lamps (not wired up yet), platform shelter (one of the hornby scaledale bus shelters), a departures board and a modern metal bench

Need to ballast the top and it should be done. Also made two nameboards for one of the platforms which im going to fit to the sides of the lamps. Cant remember what brand i used but im sure few people will recognise it. Its the set where you have to immerse each individual letter in water then spend 10 minutes fishing it out of your cup because you leave it in too long

I wanted to get the second platform down but i seem to have run out of red brick plasticard for the edging and i dont want to fit it down until ive got the edging on

Also considering some cable trunking, but ive already put bare wires down so im in two minds as to whether or not cable trunking would look better

Will put up a picture of the platform later this afternoon when ive got it done

Cable trunking is more realistic for a modern layout. You can even make it yourself by cutting strips of thick card and scoring the lines for the lids. Ten Commandments also makes a very popular ready-made product.

I look forward to seeing the platforms!

I like your car park and fencing, looks good. Are you going to do the white parking lines at some stage? That I think would really finish it off.
