Platforms are under construction but I've realised I was being a little ambitious trying to cut whole platform lengths from 2.4m of MDF so I'm cutting them in to sections.
I've also spent £68 on these.



Then I saw Five Elms video about creating platform edges using matchsticks so spent £1 on these and started cuting them in half.



Looks like a good effect once painted but now need to get rid of my Peco sides for cost price...:/

The platforms look good - bad luck only discovering that method after you'd spent all that money. Could you return them to the shop - i.e. do they have a returns policy that allows returning goods if you've changed your mind? I realise you've probably already looked into this.

Failing that, stick them on ebay as RARE!!!!!, MIB and the bids should come flocking in!

Mixie (Scarm) is very helpful.
If you are having a particular problem you can send him you plan and he will help put it right and/or point you to the bit in the manual.
I've found it very good for planning and can now knock up a shed sized layout scheme in a couple of hours.
You get to Mixie on this site and RMWeb under track planning headings.

Well I'm going to keep some in case I want to use them for the branch line platforms but the rest will go on eBay and I'll just have to stomach the loss.

It's a bit time consuming but hopefully the end result will be worth it.
BTW I've found that painting/sealing the edge of the MDF with PVA first helps with adhesion.
Can definitely see other potential uses for matchstick. And so cheap too.

A great point in time to record a trip down the line. You'll be able to repeat it at various stages, as the layout develops. I've often taken shots where I would like to have taken one before I started to show the developments.

Whilst my platforms are still under construction, I thought I'd better play around with a sample and teach myself how I'm going to paint them.
I'm using Slaters Plastikard for the side walls and needed to try and replicate an old brick wall side.

First the painted platform top with unpainted side.

It actually looks much better in the photo than in real life
I'll tell you now that I'm red/green colourblind so I'm relying on a little program called WhatColor to scan over photos of real world structures/objects and tell me what colour something is.
I used it to get the mortar colour so if it ain't right, that's why

Now don't mess around, you've clearly bought a RTR section of platform and photo-shopped a bit of wood grain on the side! Seriously, that looks really good!
