Re: Goatbridge, N.Yorks- To The Pub!

The pub looks very good, it's just a shame you couldn't make the courtyard a bit bigger for the rally. I think it looks better than the metcalfe one as its bigger :D

That's a decent old fashioned pub, all bits and pieces built on to each other, plenty of small rooms with individual atmospheres, somewhere to suit everyone. Better keep Bert out of their he'll be sinking too much of the black and white stuff.

Exactly the sort of pub I like Bufferstop! :D
The courtyard I couldn't make any bigger, it's on the base of 2 standard issue Metcalfe pubs already! I may use the the bit outside for a couple of the cars and some support gear etc. But the mock-up of sticking the minis in the courtyard proves it'll work. I hope...
Alex, I just raided the spares drawer, the paint drawer and voila as the French would say!

Seeing as the NRM tour coach is heading my way imminently I thought I'd best get on with some scenic work, specially round the station area. I HATE ballasting, yet there was much to be done. So up early on Saturday, to get it done and out of the way.
Image

Image
It actually came out quite well really. I managed not to bung the points up either!
Image
Yesterday i turned my attention to the town. I have now painted in another road, and the set an area for the station car park. It's the area around the signal box.
Image
I then tried my hand at bricklaying in 1/76 scale! On one of my better half's visits to the doll's house shop in York I found packets of brick-like things, which I assume are supposed to be used for roofing or something. Me being me i'm not bad at seeing alternative uses for things. i think it looks good...
Image
I also used the blocks to make a walkway to the signal box steps from the gate.
Image
One trick I've discovered, if you want corrugated iron go to the hot food counter in Tesco's. I got a warm sausage roll from there the other day, and had a flash of inspiration while looking at the cardboard bit of the packaging. So yesterday I cut it into strips, taped the strips to a bit of card then painted them in a mix of rust and grey. I think they look quite effective!
Image
Obviously I'll have to cut them down further to represent sheets of iron. Then I'll have to find something to do with them... ;)
One last shot for you from this weekend's doings...

Cracking stuff matey! don't rush it though, Norma still not departed here yet, aiming to pop her in the post tomorrow. Love the work on the card strips, looks highly effective, and the card will give it a natural been in situ for sometime sort of look... so yep, don't panic chap... INBOUND!! :D :D

No panic Chris, well not much anyway! In fact it's given me the boot up the @rse I needed to get back on with ballasting! When she arrives will she have an escort of the 24th's finest mate?!

More scenery this week. The car park has its first occupants
Image
More ballast has been laid, and the corrugated iron I created has come in useful for a small shelter
Image
Complete with skiving worker!
Image
And I made a horse shelter for the field. Just need to do the field itself now...
Image
I found some white metal goats I'd forgotten I bought, so in between jobs I attacked them with some paint
Image
And the local American car club's cars were attacked with a repaint too
Image
Now you may remember there is to be a Clubman's rally staging through town, using the pub yard as a service stop? One posh team has it's own service vehicle now!
Image
Beats a rusty old Transit van...
The local ATC squadron has its own Nissen hut now, and a Hunter cockpit section to play with
Image
I've NEVER seen Whitley Bay look that appealing!
Image
A spotter is now perched on the car park wall, getting the numbers of the inmates of Goatbridge shed
Image
Finally, the nearly completed station approach
Image
So not much progress I'm afraid, but to be fair I did spend most of the weekend doing an engine change on a Buccaneer aircraft...

Re: Goatbridge, N.Yorks- INCOMING!

Post by Blue_2 »

I forgot to answer your question re. buildings Alex... Basically yes there are more buildings to sort. The police station has to go in, as do several more shops, houses etc. I'm also toying with the idea of a small school and a surgery. I want to get on with tidying and arranging the remainder of the town now, as a break from godawful ballasting!
One other job I did at the weekend was adding some steps up to the footplate on my Airfix Prairie. I then dropped it,but fortunately didn't do any harm other than a bent coupling hook. That was lucky...
A distinguished visitor should be gracing Goatbridge's rails this weekend...

The pub looks first rate - as does the overall scenics. I hesitate to say it, but would it not have been easy to fill in the gaps in the sleepers between track sections/points before ballasting - it would hold them in place.

While governments may be closing doctors/hospitals and schools, Goatbridge is bucking the trend! I haven't done much on my layout for lack of resources and time, and lots of stuff I had to sort out with the council about housing. Not sure about my extension now, might just make it a fiddle yard, and build a board or something for a trackmat, really don't know.

I look forward to more pics, hope you don't have a similar accident with the visitor as you did with your prairie :P

The visitor has arrived and got onto the layout safely!
Image
Due to work preparing our Buccaneer, Dakota and Victor aircraft for an event this coming weekend I had little railway time. However I did manage to knock together some buildings. These are from the rest of the Metcalfe pub kit I used to make my big pub; the one on the left will be the surgery.

Image
Using my old bank and one of the shops from my childhood layout I now have another block of the town done.
Image

Image
I've also been bricklaying again, replacing the fence at the end of the station platform
Image
And repainted the metallic blue Morgan in a more pleasing and apt colour, BRG.
Image
And that's probably me done till I get back off holiday now! :D

Off to Malta for a week Jimmy!
The event is Battlegroup North, a re-enactor event held each year at the museum. This year it has outgrown the museum site however, and is being held jointly between the museum and Elvington airfield.
As to running any of the beasties, everything that does work will be running! On both Saturday and Sunday the SE5a, DC3 and Devon will run their engines on the museum site, while on the airfield the Nimrod will fast taxy on Saturday, the Buccaneer will fast taxy Saturday and Sunday, and our Victor will move under her own power for the first time in 2 1/2 years on Saturday with a slow speed trial run, and if that goes well a full speed run on the Sunday.
All the above was decided the week after we'd booked the holiday...
