I particularly like the horse drawn vans, I may just be tempted.

Sorely tempted by the Revolution Trains JNA-T wagons but having just lashed out for the Class 50, am having to show manly restraint

Re: Anyone currently buying?
have a triplet of the Dapol Whitby Brewery vans. they look lovely, excellent prices to bulk out a rake too
horrible runners though, wheels are a bit poor and they are a bit too light. ideally need one axle to be compensated

Re: Anyone currently buying?
Two more Triang Thompson coaches and a Hornby Gresley coach arrived.
only really wanted one of the Thompson ones to make a rake up to four of them, but £15 for the three including delivery was too good to pass up

Could resist no longer, and have ordered a Clarks Railworks Quad Art set. I am so going to visit this vendor when next we go to see relatives in West and North Yorkshire. My Hornby N2's have been upweighted to enable such as ECS turns on 14 carriage express sets up the layout gradients, so will be able to cope, while the amply weighty N7, L1 and J50 are all ready for the job as they came out of the box. I have been quietly wondering if this release will trigger a new N2. I really hope not, a J6 would be so useful, as the old Airfix GMR tooled N2 has the character in spades and any current attempt would probably miss this...

Maroon 85 A and B, as that was what was available. I dawdled over ordering, waiting to see what the early bird opinion was, and it has been favourable. (It will vastly improve on my old Kirk kit build which I long ago sold on.) For those that don't know, these rammed in more City commuters per unit tare weight than anything else; and were built such that with a GNR N2 (and happily also the GER N7 which became available at grouping) they would just fit onto the platform lengths of the 'Widened Lines' route from KX to Moorgate.
The articulation was clearly derived from experience of previous suburban service conversions on the GNR, using four and six wheel bodies, articulated into sets; and took this to the logical conclusion of a purpose designed scheme to maximise occupancy of the walking freight commuting to and from The City. The last four sets remained available until 1966, used for such as excursions up to town and return at Christmas for the shows; the last gasp of clearly pre-group origin designs in passenger service in the area, at the end typically hauled by a Brush 2, and not going 'down the hole'.
'The experience' may still be sampled on the half set still operating on the North Norfolk Railway: but you have to imagine the loco up front with the resulting exhaust sound and smoke effects in the close fitting underground tunnels: and the 'clean and jerk' getaway from the Hotel curve platform at KX, the whole train standing on a 1 in 39 six chain curve. This is the reason why the GNR N2 Big Metropolitan 0-6-2T has long term had a model, (H-D, Airfix GMR tooling via Mainline, Dapol and currently Hornby, as it was famed for its performance on this work; popularly commented on as a job the Midland 'next door' would not have attempted without two locos up front and the Lickey banker behind. The N2's other trick was successfully racing down expresses up the 'Northern Heights': with no need to take great care of the fire as the suburban turns had frequent stops in what was a 20 mile run: compared to that of a pacific or V2, that might be running for anything up to 400 miles...

Thanks for the entertaining history. Reminds me of these slam door wooden coaches (1924) which were still standard fare on Brisbane (Qld, Australia) suburban routes throughout the early-mid 1960s. Still predominantly D17 Class steam tank engine hauled up until circa end of 1960 - early 1961.

Re: Anyone currently buying?
Very much the same 'pack 'em in' seating plan, the Quad Arts had each seating bay pair as a separate compartment, warmer in winter: which at the time of design in the UK lasted from September until May, and not a problem in 'summer' which then rarely crept above 20C. (I have seen a delightful near contemporary report from the inner suburban area the Quad-Arts served, recording a cricket match in mid July abandoned, cause, 'snow stopped play'.Bigglesof266 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 10, 2025 2:16 am ...Reminds me of these slam door wooden coaches (1924)[/url] which were still standard fare on Brisbane (Qld, Australia) suburban routes throughout the early-mid 1960s...
Re: Anyone currently buying?
Quad Art set in my hands, exquisite. Estimated all up weight of a full A nd B set 1150g, all free rolling, which a RTR Hornby N2 or Oxford Rail N7 will have no trouble with. The all important appraisal by the other half: much approval, Not just the general styiing and finish, but also of the replicas of the watercolours on the compartment partitions.

I am tempted to try is after first properly stripping and cleaning the bodywork, and then new decals over. however there is a method I used years back I plan to try
basically body gets primed in a warm off white pale cream colour, then three or four coats of actual teak varnish with a brush, has to be a brush, and thin layers as you need the brush marks. then go in and redo any lining, decals over then light weathering and it really looks the part. even a more yellow base colour can work and gives a warmer tone to it.
trouble is it takes ages as it really wants to cure fully between layers.
quite a few get ok results on the colour with just the wash though, but doesn't, to me anyway, look like wood
