Wagon chassis test

Have any questions or tips and advice on how to build those bits that don't come ready made.

Mark 4! (Partial success)

mixed results

if anyone wondered, this is what a failed print looks like, issue being inadequate supports (operator error on my part)
IMG_3220.JPG
the missing corner is where I aborted the print early, the mangled bit is early on and the good bit is later in the process

plus sides though
- wider ironwork printed well and survived support removal
- brake rigging actually printed
- wagon upper works scale out as intended though some refinement will be needed for the finished thing - it was added here to add some rigidity to the chassis
- apparently axlebox spacing is close to correct

refinements
- axle box holes still need enlarging further (and to be able to fully test the positioning)
- temp upper works needs some bracing adding even if only crude to help it hold its shape

plus of course better supports needed

Mark 5! (Very nearly there!)

5th generation, basically the same as 4th, better supported and the upper works slightly more robust though still crude

didn't print perfectly, solebar is a bit too thin and thus not straight, likewise a few other bits need to be a bit stronger, and still a few support issues on one corner

otherwise pretty good, this time she took wheel bearings nicely and the spacing seems spot on. W Irons could still do with a touch more strengthening
IMG_3223.JPG
also brake rigging needs shifting outboard slightly, like quarter of a millimetre as its just rubbing on the wheel flange - even so about as free rolling as the bachmann wagon, should be spot on with a few tweaks

height is off by about 1mm, I did suspect this was a bit high, next one will one a tad lower but will gain more detailing, as well as slightly more accurate measurements (some of this is eyeballed). will also spend a bit of time pondering couplers as I'd like to do actual haulage testing with the next one if it comes out ok.

a tad light, space on the underside to add ballast if needed and of course could be given a coal load anyway

all in, for a few days work not that bad, and the best bit is - this prints as a single part, zero glue assembly needed here so far. it may be worth splitting chassis and body to print but so far its working

Don't throw it away! Rust it, weather it, plant some weeds around it - brilliant background junk! 8)

crash debris.. never actually thought of that, stick it at the bottom of an embankment, overgrown..

I may try that

Hey! The results are visually amazing! Yes, a few adjustments but wow! It is really is GOOD!
I can see you competing with the likes of the RTR manufactures soon with several 3D printers on the go keeping up with orders! :D
