As above, they will have been built as such. There is no end of such strange doings in construction of UK high density housing from the 'Industrial Revolution' right up to present. You should only see such early examples as the 'back to backs' in locations like Birmingham, and the current shared halls and staircase access, now packed with electric transport recharging, to ensure a death trap for occupants when a battery fails.

having lived in a house like that the upstairs is a bit weird. or at least it can be, one house will be wider at the front/narrower at the back and the other will be the other way around. this is very common when there is an alleyway on the ground floor. one property will "own" half of it.

gets messy when it comes to who owns which bits of the plot

in some cases its more normal and its a dummy window, in the weird split ones its still a dummy as it would be in a weird location in the actual house rooms
