My ears get blocked with excessive wax periodically, but I am always acutely aware of the loss of hearing. I have to have them syringed by a doctor once or twice a year, which is annoying as that upsets my balance for a while.

I am happy to say that my actual hearing (without wax!) is still very good, with only a slight drop-off at high frequencies in one ear, and low frequencies in the other. Both are still within the "normal" range, so at 70 I'm not doing too badly.

Back on subject, Bigmet is absolutely right about all the different factors affecting the sound. My own train room has carpet which absorbs some sound and reduces any reverberation, but taking a locomotive to a friend's layout where he has polished wooden floors and a larger open space alters the effects quite noticeably.

Unfortunately I suffer with perpetual (and sometimes quite intrusive) tinnitus, so I'm well versed on how different sounds cam be affected by hearing ailments, obstructions and other noises. I do have locos with sound but after a while I have to turn it off as the noise generally gets a bit too much for the old lug 'oles. Sadly I don't have CVs in my brain which I can tweak to turn the whining tv set off in my ears

I also have tinnitus, but I find I am the opposite to you, in that I always want some noise to stop me hearing the constant ringing. To that end, I always have the TV on or music playing at home, even if I'm not really paying attention to it. I don't have it on loud, though.
