There were several designs.
The ones I am used to have a wheeled base in the centre and the table bit folds upwards which leaves a convenient gap in the middle which in theory could protect ones scenery. Addmittedly they were not designed for model railway use, but they do look adaptable.
Whilw I have never used one myself, I have been attracted to their design.
