Although i'm not a fan of the Q1's i do respect the design, plus it took the 0-6-0 wheel arrangement to its limit.

But the most ugliest steam loco in my eyes were the Crosti boilered 9F's.

For those who don't know what these looked like here is a pic:

I'm a fan of 9F's but not of that variety, and i'm glad none survived.

Ok it was an austerity loco, but on that basis why didn't he leave the boiler clear of that stupid cladding like the Germans did... all that pipework doesn't spoil the lines, the cladding he put on does... I'm not doubting it was efficient, but so was the (austerity) J94 and that looked fine!

That double ended loco looked better with the body cladding on (it was a tram loco - and a Fairlie!):

Here's the Indian one (don't be fooled by the paint scheme, just look at the (straight) lines!!):

Still not made mind up if Q1 is ugly. i owned a hornby Southern C21 a couple of years back, there was always something about it. the loco it's self ran like a dear, so quiet and at all speeds, especially slow movement)

I found this link a while back and it shoes Q1's working as they did. i reckon aesthetically they are ugly as sin, but looking through recent posts here, they have competition. :D

To me, the Q1 looks like a few baked bean tins expanded and put onto a chassis. Hideous looking beast IMO, but i suppose it does its job.
Im yet to see a class 70, i'll judge it then  *reminds self to take a sick bag"

Not ugly as such, merely, if they didn't have the corridor connection retracted into the front all the time, they would look reasonably ok, but then, the doors would obstruct the driver's view.

I'm in NO hurry to see a '70 by the way. I still have the class 380 to look forwards too with their stupid looking slanted corridor connections.
The mockup of a '380 that was on display at Glasgow Central is now in the Glasgow Transport Museum - they can't take a Blue train, but they can take some stupid wood and fibreglass monstrosity.

Just about sums it up!

'Tis nice inside though.

Thats easy, Streamlined Coronation Class loco's, looked like an inverted bathtub with stripes, without streamlining the same loco is as pretty as a picture.

in my eyes manorbier castle was very ugly-and thats coming from a huge gwr steam enthusiast-who adores castles!
There were beuatiful examples of streamlining out there, Battle of Britains, duchesses, A4s etc..... But not gwr locos-churchward or collett could simply not streamline locos! :o
Favourite LMS (LNWR) Loco class-Bowen Cooke Claughton 4-6-0
Favourite GWR Loco class-Armstrong Metro Tank 2-4-0t or Churchward Star 4-6-0
Favourite LNER Loco class-Peppercorn A2 4-6-2
Favourite Southern Loco class-Bulleid Q1 0-6-0

TBH I thought that as well, but after visiting York and seeing it in the flesh I was pleasently surprised, it still looks impressive, and best of all it doesn't lose the Duchesses best feature, that brilliant impresssion of sheer power, something the A4s just cannot match... Its not right alongside Mallard now as it was when it wasn't streamlined as I suspect that someone else realised that it would just overshadow Mallard if it was... The A4s are greyhounds, a streamlined Duchess is a greyhound on steroids!

I have to Agree, looks much better without the streamlining, Deffinatly a case of "if it ain't broke, Don't fix it"

Ouch!!

I'll tell you another Fugly one, the class 140 prototype BR built in 1980somethingorother.

Not exactly BR's finest moment when that monstrosity entered service. Curiously, it is now preserved, so you can go along and see how NOT to design a train.

And then crashed into a wall several times for good measure!

Actually, the class 140 really is a real cracker!!:

And here is a closer picture if you scroll down. It's the odd looking one in the third picture:

I do not seem able to find many pictures of it (I can't possibly imagine why! ).

With many UK locomotives and trains now being imported from Asia I think most of them are ugly, UK railways look more like Tokyo than the UK, of course its the same over here in Oz except for our Diesel stuff which is and nearly always has been American, I do like the Class 66 and 67 back home though.
