M(36) class 0-4-2 number 78 was built in the early 1870s as one of four locomotives, and was a modified version of the original 1 class of 1855. Rather than being scrapped, the by then obsolete M78 was sold in 1896 to a contractor for construction work and later was used by the Public Works Department. In 1928 it again escaped scrapping and was placed on a plinth at Enfield Locomotive Depot in 1928, until 1973, when it became part of the NSW Rail Transport Museum collection. A remarkable survivor indeed. Here's a photo I took of it in 1969:
