cancelled preorder

Post by aleopardstail »

in mid 2022 I pre-ordered an N gauge class 86, looked a lovely model, sensible price

today I got a note saying its nearly ready!

had to cancel, over two years later I'm no longer modelling in N, ironically had this come out when it was meant to I'd probably now have three of them and still be in N gauge.

lovely looking model, just a tad too late to be any use

and also ~+40% on the price

I wonder what the record is for how long it takes from pre-ordering and the model coming into production?

Is understandable that it can take time.

well that was advertised in Q2 2022, as preorder expected Q3 2022, now expected Q3 2024

yes things can take time, here if the thing had arrived I'd probably still be working in N gauge as it looks lovely, the price hike is annoying but about what everything has gone up by in two years.

was irritating as stuff went up after this that was released well before

Dapol announced Bulleid Light Pacifics in N gauge back around 2012. They still haven't arrived.

That is quite a record so far! (Did they abandon the idea? Wonder if they forgot they had announced it? Easily done when one has a lot of things on the go! Could be another reason. No idea, though there is probably another somewhere with some manufacturer where it took even longer!)

These models - among several more in both N and OO - were announced as 'in abeyance' something like ten years ago.

Those with long memories will recall that in 2012 'Dapol Dave' was the designer at Dapol, and they had quite a list of announced product which he was confidently projecting on line as 'available soon' etc..

By the following year 'Dapol Dave' had departed to start 'DJM' and true to form repeated his 'I can get everything made in double quick time' story, and pretty rapidly crashed and burned, as several here will probably recall. And if not:
viewtopic.php?t=43387&hilit=announced+products&start=30

Dapol had to get organised with a recovery programme which was where the 'in abeyance' announcement comes in, to set expectations. Dapol have made good progress, and for example the NBL DE type 2 classes 21 and 29 in OO announced 2009 finally appeared late 2019, and very good too. (These I happen to know were produced because they were the one item on Dapol's list I was interested in.)

But progress doesn't mean everything has been restored to 'as it should be' as yet, and not being privy to their plans, nor having an active interest in N gauge, I have no idea where the small spam cans are placed in Dapol's 'to do' list.
