Laser cutting services for modellers

Post by Firefly16 »

Does anyone know if there is a reasonably priced bespoke laser cutting service for modellers?

In all seriousness, one man's reasonable is another's expensive.

IMHO, there's no such thing as a low cost laser cutting service and Ive done numerous web searches. As soon as you mention anything like 1:76 scale size, you're talking a bespoke service whether laser cutting wood, acrylic or card.

Our options are we pay the price asked by existing model laser cutting services, buy our own laser cutter or do without.

These are a few sites I found:

https://www.intentio.shop/BespokeLaserCutting
https://railwaylaserlines.co.uk/product ... /oo-gauge/

Thank you for your trouble centenary. Looking at the sites you kindly provided, it seems that I will have to do without.

The old recourse to tackle all manner of 'too expensive' problems in this hobby was the model railway club. Whether any currently operating club has such kit, and you live near enough to be worth joining, is the next question.

your best way to go would be to look for a Man shed or a makerspace type organization

Some Public Libraries operate a "tool library". While your local Public Library may not operate one, they should know of the nearest one to their branch.
HTH, Chris
P.S. Closest tool library to me is 3.5 hours drive away in St John's. That's 7 hours driving. In winter conditions think 8.

That puts ME into the thought of "maybe i should buy a laser cutter, and hire it out" a.k.a Rabbit Hole. C

Thank you for your replies Gentlemen. As well as greater cutting precision, I was thinking in terms of time saving at a time of life when time is precious. So, as in so many things, a case of making the best of existing tools and resources.
