It was real, stabilised by gyroscopic action.

From an engineering perspective, consider the downsides.
It is wholly reliant on the gyro stabilisation mechanism to counter the inherent instability. Failure = serious consequences.
Loading is inherently restricted by the restoring force available; exceed this due to off balance load, crosswind = serious consequences.
Every vehicle, passenger and freight, requires power at all times in service, even when parked and out of use to operate the gyro stabilisation.
Handling while powering down, off power, and returning to service condition, requires dedicated gear to be available.

Oh, let's just double the number of wheels...
