I have been working on a few gnarly trees for Quarry lane.

I knocked this little trial up about ten days ago:

It's basically String, Static grass, PVA and a bit of hairspray. With the exception of drying time it's very quick to make and costs pennies.

I am currently experimenting with three bigger ones which will be up to thirty scale feet in height.

Step 1: some three ply garden twine cut to size

Step 2: Soak the bottom third in PVA and allow to dry:

Step 3: unravel the three strands down to the solid glued lower third. PVA the middle third, and once dry unravel the top third and apply glue. this should give a reasonably solid skeleton:

Once the framework has dried, I applied another coat of PVA to the branches and added some long (12mm) static grass:

From here in I use cheap hairspray as my gluing agent. Another pass with the long grass, then a couple with shorter:

Closing in on acceptable tree or three, it needs to be noted that I am after a self seeded tree in poor soil rather than a public park manicured specimen:

A bit more work required, but to quote the famous BR adverts... We're getting there!

It will receive a touch up and some blending when the rest of the scenery around it is in place, but after a few passes with paint it looks presentable:
