Vauum formed thermoplastic

Has anyone done any vacuum forming of thermoplastic sheet. I know the principle but it's the practicalities that I'm interested in. How hot do youu have to get it, what degree of vacuum is needed what thickness of sheet do you need and where do you get it. My son did a vac formed car body for a slot car when he was at tech. but I'd be hoping for something a little sharper and not as large.. Any experiences, successes, failures, would be welcomed. I'm sure I could produce the box and find a suitable heat source. I wonder can a compressor be used as a vacuum pump?
