I refused to use the Hornby decoders (had several fail over the years, so they are relegated to function only use), so I wired a TCS decoder in using the 4-pin blanking plug as the new decoder plug. I have done this on three 0-4-0ST Pecketts and a Sentinel diesel from Hornby.

The TCS M1 is smaller than Hornby's own decoder but has a higher output capability.

Not withstanding their apparent fragility, is there a recommended Hornby 4-pin DCC chip for this loco? And I assume no-one has squeezed a sound chip and speaker in one of these yet?

Hi Monday,

Yes, the Hornby 4 pin should be easily available. I have at least one so
fitted. It is Just possible that I have the Hornby 4 pin in 3 that I somehow
now find sitting in my shed !!

Thanks and apologies for not seeing your Page 1 entry on your 4-pin Hornby decoder for the Peckett!

I love it BUT,

I noticed a tendency to stall, when I don't recall, but did a check on pick-up
wipers touching all wheels at the limit of the axle lateral movement. One wasn't
so decided to tweak with my fine point tweezers.
Ping, it shot off with a surprising amount of energy. No spares at the time, expected
soon ? Well this week Peters Spares say they have nothing for the Peckett B2.

I've sent an email to Hornby, let's see what they come up with.

The wipers on this model are stainless steel and attached to the Keeper Plate in a
sealed plastic sandwich. I MIGHT be able to solder a new home made wiper on, but
if that screws up the keeper plate what then !!!

Any little saddle tank but especially a Pecket is guaranteed to bring a smile to my face. :D I'm currently remodeling the bookshelves beneath my layout to accommodate 3 four foot by one foot lightweight baseboards, as I can't put off the urge to start another layout, quite what it will be I haven't yet decided but I may well incorporate my "Santa Special" working diorama into it. It will definitely involve 0-4-0s, small 0-6-0s and short coaches.
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Hi Bufferstop,

I'll reserve judgement on the short coaches - not a pet hate, but close.
I've become aware that all my recent purchases have been small locomotives.
This has meant the majority being Hornby, Bachmann don't seem interested in
such small traction.
The sucker I am I have gathered up over the years :-

2 x 0-4-0 Pecketts
1 x 0-6-0 Peckett
1 x 0-4-0 Sentinel
1 x 0-6-0 Sentinel
1 x 0-4-0 Andrew Barclay 'Katie'
1 x 0-4-0 Ruston 48DS Always run without the unsightly pick-up wagon
1 x 0-4-0 Hallingbury Tram from a Roxey Mouldings white metal kit
1 x 0-4-0 Howard from a Roxey Mouldings white metal kit
2 x 0-4-0 Hornby 06
1 x 0-4-0 Caledonian Pug
1 x 0-4-0 Holden 101
1 x 0-4-0 Dapol BR Pug

Not all run well enough to shunt with, but pleased to have them !!

That sounds very like my industrial locomotive collection, Geoff. I also developed a bit of a weakness for the small, colourful locos, also going as far as creating a few unusual ones with 3D printed bodies from Hardy's Hobbies on Hornby (or other) chassis.

Like you I went for the Ruston 48DS and the Sentinel diesels to supplement the steam, and also added two Janus locos and a Heljan 05 in "Cider Queen" light green livery. I also use this industrial fleet as an excuse to get other small locomotives that I like but would not normally run in their main line railway liveries, but am happy to repaint into more colourful guises: the Heljan 1366 pannier tank fell into this category, painted in blue (waits for all the GWR fans to throw up their hands in horror!).

It all adds to our fun, and that's really what the hobby is supposed to be for. 8)

I have been manfully resisting 'the fun' as I haven't quite yet got 'home' on all the traction I can legitimately employ. But there is one beckoning to me, the only 0-4-0T I actually saw working on BR, Mr Hill's thuggish design for the GER, LNER/BR Y4.
https://www.lner.info/locos/Y/y4.php
A happy convergence of factors is at work here. I have a Hill design Belpaire boiler, smokebox and cab moulding from an Oxford N7 available for carving, (the mechanism from which has been redeployed into a whitemetal N7/5 body, 'one I completed earlier'). And our friends at Rapido are dangling the ex-NER Y7 which should provide a suitably compact mechanism (sentiment suggests that this should come from an LNER group loco, support the home team and all that, although of course a Stephenson's type would equally suffice) and the parts bin has all sorts of cylinders and outside valve gear parts, among which are the miniscule set off the 'Black Ajax'. So there's the happy prospect ahead of mushing together all these bits...

Hornby again letting us down !!
As somewhere in the text here I mention a pick-up wiper snapping off.
Couldn't find anyone had received any spares at that time.
Now a couple of years later Peters Spares have seen nothing and guess what !!
Hornby don't have any either. I don't think any have been made available.

Something still on shelves NEW and you can't get spares !!

I'll have to study the sandwich keeper plate and work out how I can add a home
bodge job wiper.

Happy with the model, but support lacking to say the least.

My Peckett is safely tucked away at the moment so I went to enjoy the video but I couldn't as the video is age restricted and youtube wants me to sign in.
I don't have nor want a youtube account. Could you possibly lift the restriction for watching it please Geoff?
Thanks

Ahh E2E,

I'm not GeoFF03, so I can't remove any age restrictions because it's not my account.
I can watch it, and I suppose I must be registered, but I thought most of Youtube was
open for anyone to see.
Exactly what the age restriction is I don't know, I would have thought it was to keep
youngsters out. I suppose Youtube have that information from registering, Can't remember,
but as I do post videos I'm known.
Shouldn't have any bad consequences from registering so why not try ?

I've had to reload the video without the age restriction https://youtu.be/eD_McYlP4Q0 This was due to a US child protection law which caused a bit of a stink among YouTube creators at the time. Hope this works out for you this time E2E.

Thanks for that GeoFF03. Most enjoyable.
I especially like the 'in-wagon' shots. Feels like being shrunk to Hornby size. :D
