Ball Bearing Production is Up! Soviet Memories III.

Post by Chops »

This is the sort of headline day in and day out back in '64, if you lived in the USSR. The following video is NOT political; it is a patchwork of memories from a long time ago.

"Soviet Memories II is not apolitical." If you want to see it, you have to go find it on my YouTube channel by that title. It satirizes Orwellian developments here in the USA.

Killingly funny to those like myself who endured all this nonsense being promoted in the UK by certain politicians and their supporters as recently as the 1980s, that promoted the idea that the USSR's system was a paradise to which we should aspire. I knew different, thanks to continental family experiences, confirmed in widescreen and surround sound by the publication of the late Robert Conquest's 'The Great Terror'. (Gosh, that's over 50 years ago! How time flies.)

Nowadays I have 'The Death of Stalin' to show to those of my acquaintance who still struggle to shake off the powerful brainwashing that there is anything good to be said of socialism.

Whilst The Death of Stalin is extremely funny and not entirely a work of fiction, your latter comment is coming dangerously close to opening a political can of worms....

Agreed. Try to keep comments factual, if it looks like an opinion, don't post it.

New Trains to the Baltic! CCCP

Post by Chops »

A lovely addition from Mr. Willis of the UK, joshing_man, who is selling a splendid range of used items in the Trading Area. Arrived in mint condition, solidly packed, which defeated the usual efforts by the postal service in the USA to destroy it. Clearly a Soviet Bloc piece, country of origin, I do believe from the customs documents, are in Cyrillic. Some speculation if this rather excellent model is the East German brand, PIKO. Certainly far and beyond the typical stuff of Soviet manufacture, which was notably crude and simple. This is refined and complex. Wish half of my British head end ran as well as this does.

Apologies for the lousy recording. Camcorder may have been constructed in the USSR for all the good it does. Will reshoot later today to capture the real excellence of this superb model.

In any event, it is a whimsical "trailer" advertising Soviet trains from one place to another; the Soviet economy did not promote tourism

I love the editing, cutting the same train repeatedly leaving in the same direction, and the reality shot where it leaves one coach behind and has to go back for it! Soviet propaganda at it's best!
