Proposed Bulleid 4DD Double Decker EMU from KR models

Postby Bigmet » Mon Oct 04, 2021 12:48 pm

Here's something really unusual, a model of the only attempt in the UK at a two level EMU to really ram the walking freight in, on commuter runs operated by the Southern. What with OVS Bulleid being a star at Tetris, even though it hadn't been invented at the time, he realised the convenient way people bend at hips and knees to sit down, resulted in the possibility of 'nesting' them vertically. By doing this it was possible to pack in 25% more walking freight per unit train length.

This idea worked well enough that the two trains constructed worked in both BR green and corporate blue liveries. There were snags, mainly that the station dwell time was longer than the conventional slam door compartment EMU's, because more people had to get through a single door shared between an upper and lower compartment, and access to the upper compartment involved a short narrow stairway.

Whatever, if you have always fancied such an uncommon beast on your layout, time to make your intentions known...

Remember them well having grown up in SE London in the 50s and early 60s. Travelled on them many times and will definitely be having one or both on my layout! You never knew when waiting for a train to go into London what would turn up, and it was always a pleasant change from the ubiqitous EPBs. I always sat upstairs - you not only got a better view but in winter it was always warmer. You were well away from the door, and the heating air always rose to the top! It wasn't popular in rush hours due to the cramped accomodatation, but the SR soon changed its diagrams to work more off-peak services.
