It does beg the question (as I have no clue), can you turn down DCC sound on the decoder itself?

I think you can. I have only had one sound loco myself so I have not tried as I no longer have it. One can easily turn the sound off if needed by switching the relevent function to off.

I turned to DC with my narrow gauge so I have no sound.

What impressed me with this little layout was how small it is to fit so much in.

To negotiate the gradients one will need a decent loco that will also negotiate sharp curves. My loco number one would easily get up them hills pulling a load, but some locos may struggle as they would need extra weight to get the traction.

It is interesting though, and part of the prototypical concepts of narrow gauge is that the real railways would only have one or two locos... This means that in model form, with only a few locos one can really concentrate on improving the ones one has.
