Wheels for J15

Post by David Bigcheeseplant »

I have been playing around with designing and 3D printing the correct wheels for a P4 version of the Hornby J15 as Alan Gibson does not do the correct wheel.

The image is my 3D render

What materials can 3D printers print? I know that resins can add metalic particles if one is resin casting. Can 3 D printers use a similar mix?
Failing that metal tyres on 3D printed wheels might work.
Making wheels is interesting.

"FDM" printers (as opposed to resin printers) can print with metallic or conductive filament but I would've thought you'd be better off getting the rim turned in a lathe of some kind.

The wheel centres are resin with a steel tyre pressed on, I have since added crankpins

They look very good. So did you make the rims or buy them or take them from the existing wheels?

I used Alan Gibson tyres he sold them to me as separate items, although you can also get tyres from Ultrascale and Bill Bedford
