Ned's Shed

Post by NedFlanders »

The authorities have deemed that a Castle is required for the layout.... the fact that the track hasn't been laid yet doesn't come into it apparently.

Anyhowdy, a spot of browsing for a castle/folly showed up the Scalescenes castle - https://scalescenes.com/product/t020-castlefolly/ - which I think will do a fine job.

But better to walk before I try to run. So I printed out a couple of huts courtesy of Mike of Wordsworth fame and picked the corrugated hut - Thanks Mike.

I cut out the door and window and put a layer with them on the inside to give it some more relief. I also printed out a Lintel and stuck it on for the same reason. I'm very happy with the result after it being a good while since doing the low relief warehouse last year. :)

After I took the photo I printed out a concrete base for it to both give it some more stability - no photo of that, sorry.

I think a couple of more huts, smaller buildings will follow so I felt it was time to start the workbench, so here I am now.

Cheerio,
Ned.

Looks nice. Often don't realize how small they are.

I know exactly what you mean.
Just by the by, I found these in the last couple of days:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-72-Scale-M ... 1438.l2649

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Miniart-Assa ... 0005.m1851

They are 1/72 scale and possbily cheaper if you search around.
Also Airfix made a Sherwood Castle kit sometime ago.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Airf ... Sw7dFc6oeY
And this one would look English if you didn't add the turret roofs.

Castle/Folly suggestions

Post by NedFlanders »

Thanks for your suggestions.

the Domestic Authorities reviewed them and picked the Scalescenes one.

I've also bought the Box File layout from them to also practice with - that should be entertaining.....

Hi Ned
I have built a couple of Scalescenes kits and they make up very nicely. I found that I was salvaging card from a variety of sources. Cornflake boxes are good along with cat food boxes.

The card buildings were put on hold due to various real world priorities but construction began again in the new year.

Tv Corner on the layout was going to start needing buildings/place holders so I went to that fine Emporium "The Wordsworth Model Railway" and printed out a few likely suspects.

I started with Arkwright's Shop as I felt that would cover most of the medium structure basics and this is what resulted, not a bad looking model from the four foot viewing range. I cut out the windows/door and glued on a second layer on the inside that had the doors and windows and then stuck the sign and the windows lintels on the front layer which gave a pleasing 3d effect.

However I did find a couple of issues with my abilities/ building supplies and you can see my mistakes here in all their glory.
all the problesm with ArkWrights.JPG
1. The card i used was too thin ( old calendars that i have plenty of), you can see the front wall bows inwards and the top of the left gable wall also bows in at the top quite badly

2. I forgot completely about colouring in the underneath of the roofing/corners so there is plenty of white on show.

3. My efforts with the glue strip to get good corners were similarly found lacking. look at the two left hand corners for the amount of white on show even before colouring.

4. My paper that I print on is probably a bit cheap as you can see that when I tried to colour in bottom of the sign the bleed of the felt tip pen was showing up.

So I sat back, looked around for better supplies/tools and thought about the techniques that I was poor on. The results of which will be in the next post......

So I regrouped , thought about the materials and the abilities I had ( and the fact i kept losing my reading glasses, and so couldn't see very well....) , and had another go.

This time I picked the four house terrace. For this one I was going to test of gluing two calendars together to give me a more stable cardboard and try some butt/chamferred joints.

This time I didn't cut out the doors/windows as I wasn't sure how my changes to the build would work out and if i had spent all that time cutting out doors etc. and if it didn't work out........

Anyhow, after gluing the printouts to the now double layer of calendar card i found I had much more stable walls. For the Wall Corners and the roof top/bottom I cut the lines at an angle of about 45 degrees. with the walls I then glued on the glue joint strips so that when the chamfered corners came together that the gluestrip would act as a butt joint on the inside to help line up the chamfers and give it more regidity. you can see from that here - the red arrow is pointing to the 45 degree angle on the corners and the black arrow shows the glue strip butt joint.

Now I glued the front wall to the inner supports - here i also removed the glue strips for better or worse and used corner reinforcements instead.

and now the roof

And so, on went the final roof section.
Second roof panel.JPG
So, what did I find with my changes? Well:.....

The chamfered wall corners reduce the need for hiding the white card, but I did colour them in first with a pencil so little white should show.

Similarly, cutting the bottom of the roof with an angle also hides the card edges well

The structure seems sound, the walls are generally straight, although when I was gluing on the roof I forgot to check that the wall corners were at right angles so the building is a slight parallelogram rather than a rectangle but, like forgetting to colour the roof underside in arkwrights shop, that's another gotcha to remember in future.'

Next up will be the chimneys. I got Arkwrights reasonably well done on the second attempt so I must have a similar go here and then do the capping/flashing.

The bottom line is - thanks Mike for putting these up here for us to use, while kit bashing was never high on my list of things to do, I find I am enjoying this now.

All Together now.JPG
(Quick Edit) - I forgot to mention that I used Pritt Stick glue for gluing together the layers of Calendars and also the printouts to the card as Mike does and I used the Rocket Card glue for the joints/everything else as it gives that momentary bit of time to adjust and then sets quickly. I decanted some of the glue into one of those little Metcalfe glue bottles that use pins as stoppers - you can see it hiding in the top right hand corner of the final roof section photo above. With the joints, say like where the roof meets the gable wall, once I start the glue coming out as I draw the bottle along the joint it comes out as a nice bead without too much pressure on the bottle. Those little bottles were a godsend here.

Ned.

I commend you for your "warts & all" account - a lot of us will have learnt, or will learn, some good tips here.

Looking forward to more.
