So, My First Ever Layout Starts ....

Postby BlueDay » Thu Oct 03, 2019 7:08 pm

Hi all. Been about 40 years planning (I’m 51  ) but finally I’ve got started in my own model railway. Started out a year ago with not much of a clue what I was doing, but reading this forum and some others, asking questions and taking tips on board I’ve finally got a basic layout down. I’ll post some pics below. Ideas / hints more than welcome, please be gentle with any criticism I’m a tender soul

Idea is for a fairly modern layout with a passenger / freight mix, although if I took the station out I’d have massive more scope I reckon for just freight.

Hi Blueday - Always great to see a new project starting, you look as if you have plenty of space there. How are the curved points worling out for you, many modellers avoid these as they are notorious for causing derailments. Can you do a track diagram, woul dbe interested to know where the two tracks at the back on the left go?
Best of luck with your project.

Hey Jim

Yeh the curved points can be temperamental but so far so good. The track isn’t fully fixed down yet so that should help. I’ll try and get a track plan uploaded, but basically too left of the plan the 2 lines disappear under the eaves and reappear at the back. My plan is to construct a tunnel entrance and eventually have the track at the back oov

Interesting trackplan there, Blueday, and what seems to be acres of space!
Will it be DCC or DC controlled?

DCC using RM. the track plan is really just out of my head stuff. There is still space as you say, will probably formulate ideas as I go. Went to the MRE in Sheffield yesterday to get some ideas. Also bought a couple of new engines to run :D

Now having second thoughts about layout. Was intending on a freight / passenger mix, with a station as in the picture. But I’m thinking freight only would give me far more scope for rolling stock / engines / layout.

Hmmmmm.....

Looks interesting BlueDay, and will take many back to the time of their own first layout. Look forward to seeing it develop. Good luck with your venture.

OK so I think I'm settled on a basic track plan, have it in the SCARM software but struggling to see how I can post it on here?

Hi Blueday,

there may be a more elegant way to do it but what I did was to zoom out until I could see the full plan ( presuming you have a windows PC/Laptop), open the "Windows Snipping Tool" ( Click start and just start to type Sni..... it should appear in the search results) Then I click New - select the area of scarm I want a shot of and then choose File - Save as and choose jpeg as the file type.

Now you should have an image file that you can upload the same as your previous images.

Blueday, there is an "export" function in Scarm.

As NedFlanders suggested zoom out until you can see the whole plan, then go to File > Export
In the dialogue box select "jpeg" and save. Your plan should now be saved as an image.
