RC CONTROLLED LIMA DELTIC
Hi all i have been conspicuous by my absence on the forums due to my other hobby RC Planes.
I have decided to fix a problem that has plagued me from the beginning with my layout and that is keeping the tracks clean, and cleaning then.
Most track cleaners get towed behind a loco which travels over the dirty tracks first making the wheels dirty and of course causing the loco to stop.
I tried pushing the track cleaner but usually ended up with a derailment.
So to fix this problem I have gone and fitted a 2.4GHz RX and brushed speed controller to a Lima Deltic "MELD" it runs of an 800 mah 3S lipo battery, so it does not require any pick-up from the tracks, hence don't care about dirty wheels.
I have not run it around the whole layout as there are RC planes across the tracks in places, so have to remove those first.
The testing has been successful even run it without any tracks.
Below are the first 5 photos of the process, I took the body of the chassis and removed the clear window plastic. I cut the central roof section at the ends where the ridge is on the outer side. And along the length where the green and grey paint meet, there is a sort of raised trim there.
The tool I used is a razor saw blade that fits into an exacto type handle can be seen in the background of last photo, there is a close-up of the tool in one of the later photo's I can only post 5 photo's per entry. so will post some more shortly.

Re: RC CONTROLLED LIMA DELTIC
Here is the next 5 pictures.
After cutting the roof open I glued the window plastic into the body, as it would have probably broke when I tried to cut it out.
Pictures 1 and 2 show the widow glass glued into place.
3rd and 4th show the middle cut out of the window glass.
5th photo shows the razor saw that I used to cut the plastic.
more photos to follow, and I will have a video of the running, still have to sort out the reverser though.

If you are converting a 00 gauge loco to radio control you have picked one of the most ideal locos to do it. Those Lima locos have so much room under the body.
I never forget one model railway shop who used to advertize in the Railway Modeller in thw 1980's to '90's which I can't remember which shop it was... They used to offer free toothpaste if desired which was applied loose in the bodies of Lima locos. I never heard of anyone who had the toothpaste. They said "We do not recommend this treatment but anyone who wants it..."

Re: RC CONTROLLED LIMA DELTIC
I have uploaded a short video on Youtube of the Deltic running
https://youtu.be/LgXiJ7O43X8
Next stage is to cut the bottom of the fuel tanks and place the track cleaning parts into them.

Nice to see you back! What is the hold up with reversing, just not got round to it or is it technical ?(doubt it is as most RC controllers have at lest two channels). Why did you have to butcher the body?
Re: RC CONTROLLED LIMA DELTIC
Hello,
Very interested in what it would cost or has cost to do the deltic.
Thanks for showing and very clever idea.

I’m glad to be back with the trains, the keeping the track clean has been my biggest problem. But now with this I will be able to keep on top of it.TimberSurf wrote:Nice to see you back! it is easier to just take the lid off to plug the battery in and then disconnect it, all without taking it of the track, I don't have a switch set-up yet. It is a pain turning it upside down and prying the tabs out to get the body off.
I thought I did a pretty neat job, but I am biased, it runs for about 3 hours on the 800mAh battery
As far as reverse goes, I have a 4 ch RX so plenty to use to switch forward or reverse, I wanted to use a reversing ESC but all I had was a 2S that has reverse, 3S don't seem to have reverse.
So I need to sit down and dissect a servo with stripped gears and convert it to drive a relay.
Will get back to the layout in the next couple of weeks I hope.

The cost is a bit hard to work out I was given a complete plane in flying readiness. And when I turned the plane into tip fodder I used the radio gear for this project.GreenBR wrote:Hello,

On ebay you could probably get a FLYSkY 3ch set-up cheap this is $50 au for a car set-up.
I use FLYSKY receivers, but my TX is a Jumper T12 with OpenTX
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Flysky-FS-G ... :rk:7:pf:0
I am looking at building believe it or not my own TX/RX set-up using if you guessed Arduino you are right
If you want more details on what else you could use to do the same thing I will gladly look into for your

Re: RC CONTROLLED LIMA DELTIC
This morning did a timed test run on the Deltic with the current set up the train will run for 3 hours and 30 minutes and the battery has 14% charge left.
When I fly I go down to about 10% and that’s generally for a 5 to 10 minute flight depending on how much hot-dogging I do.
The battery in the Deltic is a 3S 800mAh 25C the 25C means I can draw up to 25 times the capacity at a constant rate. With a burst rate of about 35C
so what does that all mean well 25 x .8 = 20 Amps constant draw for about 2.4 minutes probably less as the voltage drops the current will change.
If I used a smaller C rating about 1C then for the same physical size battery I can get a higher capacity hence longer run time.
I will stick the power meter on to the Deltic and get some actual figures for the setup and look at some other size batteries to work out times that could be had

Re: RC CONTROLLED LIMA DELTIC
So the motor is drawing a tad under 200mA, about what would be expected if it is in decent condition. (The current draw will increase with train load and gradients, but unlikely to get to 500mA, so probably 2 hour run time even with a big load on.)timbologist wrote:This morning did a timed test run on the Deltic with the current set up the train will run for 3 hours and 30 minutes and the battery has 14% charge left... Ample charge capacity, and you don't need a battery capable of rapid discharge either. Interesting
