As mentioned elsewhere, I have been on holiday (and visiting family) in the USA. Whilst in Connecticut we visited the Essex Steam Railway where I noticed a Porter which bore a family resemblance to my recently converted loco (although the full size one was an 0-6-0).

Apparently:

On January 9, 2009, The Friends of The Valley Railroad, a volunteer organization working with the railroad to perform track work, equipment maintenance and many other tasks, took possession of Simons Wrecking #2, a Porter 0-6-0 tank engine from the city of Peabody, Massachusetts which had been part of the famed Steamtown collection. The engine will be cosmetically restored for the time being while donations are raised for the potential to return it to steam.

Very nice. They have a very generous loading gauge over there. Even those little locos are large compared to ours.

I decided to get my temporary 'layout' out again today and play trains . Good fun adjusting the speeds of my 4 locos so they kept a constant distance apart (oh the joys of DCC!).

Mind you, there were occasionally some significant hazards on the line . . .

Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to find I had a wagon kit I hadn't made up yet - a Smallbrook Studio Inside Bearing Tub Waggon. It took my fancy because of the 'inside bearings' configuration.

It is a simple kit to construct:

After seeing these slate wagons at LLechwedd over half term, I was inspired to add loads to some of my wagons

Like the above I wanted to pack slate into a wagon, but probably not such thin slate! Hence I ordered some 1/24th scale slate roof tiles off ebay (intended for roofing dolls houses) which I thought might be an appropriate size. A pack of 250 of them duly arrived:

I started by just laying a row in the wagon:

Heartened by the look of this I filled the wagon and glued in place using watered down PVA - I didn't think it practical to make this load removable:

I also wanted to add some coal to the tub wagon I had just constructed, and found a video online from 'TeacherTiger' which showed an interesting technique. First you cut a small piece of polystyrene to fit into the wagon:

The small nails were an attempt to allow the load to be removed using a magnet (though not sure if this will work as I haven't got a magnet strong enough!).

This was painted black and then, using the technique from the video, placed inside the wagon inside some cling film. Coal was then added dry, followed by spraying with water and adding diluted PVA (i.e. similar to ballasting track). At this point it looked like this (sorry for poor quality photo):

After about FOUR DAYS drying time (!) I removed the cling film to reveal:

I think the the Doll's house slates look superb!
I did a How To Video on the removable load, quite recently, the magnet on a wand was from a 'Pound' shop.

TimberSurf, yes that's the same technique in your video, only the one I followed did not mention the magnetic removal (I added that bit myself). However I think I should have used a larger piece of metal in the load (like you did) . . .

Some Slimrails wagon kits I ordered arrived and I have constructed the first one = a box van with sliding doors.

These kits are well made, quite reasonably priced and go together nicely - I fitted the door closed on one side:
