Unfortunately I can't watch absolutely nothing on Channel 5 website because I live on the dark side of the British Channel.

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I liked it, I was concerned they would spend time trying to make the competitors look like weirdos but all the presenting staff and judges seemed really enthusiastic.
I was a bit disapointed the Jurassic Park theme was just random plastic dinosaurs, if they actually tried watching the film and using a couple of pre builds for recognisable set pieces like the big park gates and a tyranosaur paddock could have been awesome. Big missed opportunity, great tracklaying and terrain build.
The pre built layout was very very nice but they did bend the rules so thems the risks.
Agree with the winning team, it was a bit quick and dirty on the terrain front with the grass mat but it was mostly done and looked reasonable.
I can see the issue with allowing more time as you still have to cut it down to a TV program. And lets be honest how much time is 'enough'...

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
Just got round to watching the show reminded me of a lot of clubs fair amount of skill shown and the right layout won on the day .Could you build a layout in 3 days take me a month to do the base board. At least it is opening our great hobby to the general public.
Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I've made an N gauge layout in a day from the legs up, but it didn't have buildings and everything used was sectional track and ready to run except for the ballast and the scenery. (The scenery was basic scatter and the board was flat so it wouldn't win any awards).
The woodwork for the board was easily made as it was a 4x2 layout so didn't need much support. Mine wasn't really what some would call a completed layout but it depends on ones view. My layout did have backscenes which added a little dimension to it.
I have to say that I have seen others do excellent work in making a layout in a day. To be honest though I wouldn't want to build a layout quick. I tend to take my time. (Most of you have noticed this! ).

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I've just watched this and found it entertaining.
Missenden were clearly cheats and deserved to lose. However their layout was spectacular and showed what can be done with time.
Strangers on a model railway were worthy winners despite a large expanse of grass sheet, everything worked well.
Porthcawl were unfortunately beaten by time and could have won if they had finished everything.
I think the scratch build challenge was a good idea ruined by the chosen objects, a high heel shoe for God's sake. Should have given them something a little more useful.
As a complete novice myself, I do feel the chance to educate was missed. As a series they have time to show a little bit more detail of a skill each week. For example track laying week one, scenery construction week two, weathering week three etc.
All in all a good program which I will watch again.

I agree it did feel like it was missing something along these lines, all thats needed is enough to point people in the right direction.sjgarth wrote:As a series they have time to show a little bit more detail of a skill each week. Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
What I found interesting about the scratch build challenge was that the response of the competitors probably mirrored this sentiment and one team member was very outspoken on his negative thoughts on the choice of items that had to be used, while the rest just got one with trying to create something reasonably credible, fair play to the producers for allowing the guy to speak up and including it on the programme.sjgarth wrote: I think the scratch build challenge was a good idea ruined by the chosen objects, a high heel shoe for God's sake. Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I enjoyed the programme.
As previously mentioned the scratch build item given to the competitors was a bit random but I like the nissan hut/mine entrance thingy.
All in all I thought we would be treated to the stereotypical railway modelling rivet counters. In fact I found it quite the opposite i'm pleased to say.
And yes, although great, Missenden's confidence was ill placed because basically they cheated. Impressive though!
There was also (if they had all worked) some great ideas for making "action" cameos on a layout.
FINALLLY in the midst of all the, let's be honest, MORONIC CRAP tv something worthwhile watching.
Thanks

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
My main beef was the challenges. saw a trailer for the next one and its seems to be something involving blackadder! personally it would have been more interesting to me if it was like week 1: an engine shed week 2: mainline station etc.. 3 viaduct etc.. but then i guess you lose the appeal to the casual viewer. But then you get all sort of hobby and car shows where its quite serious with the actual technical side of the subject like wheeler dealers and they don't have restore the vehicle to look like the batman car to get the punters to watch.
Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I believe they did do something along those lines (some of the participants mentioned it over on RMW) but either there wasn't the time in the programme to include it, or it was felt that for the intended viewer (not us BTW!) it would have been a turn-off which TBH it probably would have been.alex3410 wrote:I agree it did feel like it was missing something along these lines, all thats needed is enough to point people in the right direction.sjgarth wrote:As a series they have time to show a little bit more detail of a skill each week. Several people have criticised the use of grass mat but I use it for all my layouts, often as a base on which I put selected areas of static grass. I think for them it was the right idea, the only thing they missed was to smooth it out a bit and tone down some areas, but i assume that, like the rest, they ran out of time. Grass mat seems to divide opinion amongst modellers, personally I feel that it's a real boon and enhances a layout when used correctly and is less likely to fade and feature bald patches where static grass is used exclusively. The one time when grass mat looks completely wrong is when it's used on flat surfaces, I don't think I've ever seen a perfectly flat field or meadow!

Have you never been to Norfolk?b308 wrote: I don't think I've ever seen a perfectly flat field or meadow!
I only caught the bit at the end where they were judging the layouts, loved the winning one and missendens was nice but could have been finished better. We don't have channel five saved on our sky box, we have to use trickery to get the channel on and you can't record shows either.

Yes, and it's not flat. If you look you'll see that most fields have undulations, not big, but you can see them. And that's before you see the drainage ditches and the different levels for the roads and railways over the surrounding land... I'm sorry but to me a field that is made from a piece of flat board (or, even worse, is just the baseboard where the track is on exactly the same level) just looks totally unrealistic, no matter where it's based. Nature doesn't do perfectly flat.Alexander Court wrote:Have you never been to Norfolk?
