I have always liked those Geoff. I just wish I had a justification for building one. If one of the GWR’s absorbed railways had them I could but it’s just too North Eastern.

Did you solder the handrails?

That's an oldie!! Lovely job Geoff.
You can guarantee, if there are 'fiddly bits' it usually means a quality model
and this is just that. You have made a very neat job of it Geoff, especially the
handrails, anyone would think you'd done it before

What a difference the paint makes, cracking job.

Hi Lysander,

No I didn't solder although for a strong join I suppose it would be the way to go
and they recommend using solder paste. I don't have any and my fine soldering
iron has failed. I used good quality superglue but Derek will be warned that it's
a very delicate model and isn't up to much handling.
19 pieces of bent fine brass wire, you don't get enough in the kit even if you
don't have any scrappers and I 'lost' 3 of the first 8, the wire breaks if you try
any further manipulation after the first bend !!

Because I told Derek I couldn't justify more wagons myself it looks like he's
after an outside contractor ...... gave me this kit on 1st May, then a Ratio
plywood van on the 8th May and I have reason to believe another of these
is on the way !!

So thanks for the comments guys, and yes Jim I suppose I've made a wagon, or
two over the last few years, but none as trying as this with all it's brass wire !

Slow I know, been waiting for paints to dry !!
Had it's second coat of Bauxite, currently still damp, but have given the
running boards a woodish coloured undercoat.

Still needs it's extended stove-pipe chimney, roof painting and several
lamp brackets.

Finishing is such a drag, getting to decals is what will make it come
alive.

All construction finished
Wot no decals - Ahh that's because the decal sheet that comes with
the kit was duff !! A press-fix type, but one that had no adhesive to either
hold in place when pressed, or when wet and tissue removed. Now had to
order a HMRS decal sheet from which I can get everything except the allocation
name 'Thirsk' that I wanted to use !!

HMRS decal sheet in - Job (almost) done !

Gateshead being the only suitable decal for an allocation address.
I will try a few ideas on the duff decal sheet, I've not given up on
it yet, this is finished short of a light weathering and overall
varnish therefore if I screw up the original sheet nothing lost !!

Not easy, but great fun and I like the results.

Really attractive build Geoff. Birdcage stock is fascinating. I still want one and did find photos of an LMS (probably ex-LNWR) one, but it couldn’t really be bashed from the NE kit. I’m sure I’ve seen photos of a pre-grouping Welsh one too, but I can’t find the source.

Hi Tony,

While it's unusual for me to do pre-grouping stock it's your bread & butter,
certainly those 4 & 6 wheels coaches are !!

The birdcage job is for my buddy Derek and not only did I put more care into
it, but also found it a fascinating subject. However while that was taking
centre-stage there are a few other jobs going on. Here we see a Parkside
12 ton plywood van painted in Bauxite, a Ratio Southern 12 ton plywood
van with a fist 'undercoat' of faded brown. Then we have painting starting
on a Dapol 16 ton mineral that I made up in 1.1/2 hours last Tuesday at a
club night 'teach-in' session. From parts to running in that time was of course
only part of a job, now needing painting, load, decals & weathering.

Image

The decalled van is an early un-fitted 12 ton van made using an un-painted
'kit' for the want of another word from Dapol.

I may not be on NRM much at the moment, but keeping very busy still.

Ditto Geoff, but I'm pretty busy still, too [although a week in Spain beckons again!].

Those Ratio Southern plywoods are nice kits, I've made a few and it's a pleasure, once in a while, to make something which just goes together like it should! I'm 75% of the way through the second LMS 6 wheeler and a third is about 10% done. I'll be pleased to finish them because there is so much else to build, but seeing your freight stock makes me wonder whether an excursion back into mixed freight might be on the cards......

Not been doing much over the last couple of weeks.
I've finished Derek's Ratio SR ply van kit and as Lysander says, it's an easy kit
looks good and runs well. Here is the best shot I have of it, being his kit I
didn't do many photographs.

Image

He wanted a loose coupled version and it was plonked on the end of my current
diorama build, hence it being part of this scene.

Well I simply couldn't live without a few kits to make, as a result I've put another
10 into stock. The first will be another pair of those Ratio SR Ply vans, both fitted.
One BR numbered in Bauxite, the other in small logo Southern.
I will take some photos of these going through.

O.K it's dull and just started to rain ............But I managed to cut the grass first !!

Here we have the contents of two of the Ratio SR/BR 12 ton plywood vans kits, No.593.
A few thing I like about these kits is a quite comprehensive instruction sheets, Metal
axle sets complete with brass bearing inserts, and a decal sheet with a few options.

I will be starting after lunch as the dear lady is out this afternoon.

I didn't get as far as expected.
I do have to make a purchase though. Looking into my couplings tin
I find I've run out of Bachmann short tension lock versions, only have
a few of the long version, but these would increase separation of stock.
One almost ready for painting

Image

The small pile of plastic parts for couplings destined for my bin.

Image

Work in the yard stopped after a courier delivered another load of
Bachmann Collector Club stock boxes.

Image

These need the interior trays making up and what a mess of small cutout
waste accrues while doing it. Had to then clean up afterwards !!

There may be a video - Youtube permitting, as it's thrown it's dummy out
of the pram !!

https://youtu.be/c162zU6miwU

This should be a video of mostly kit built wagons running around my garage test track St Oval.
When I started kit making I bodged up some couplings that proved less than 100% reliable and
have now cut away to replace with Parkside (Peco) PA-34 mounting blocks.
