Well technically you are, but when our standing 4 ft away no-one has noticed at various exhibitions. Also secondly this is a low resolution print. I have a 50 micro print. There are no lines

My personal thoughts are that 50 micron layers are usually the thickest layers you want when working with an SLA style printer. That said, I'm working in N gauge so this is even more useful - although I've had some quite nice prints out of iMaterialise in the past printed at 100 micron layer thickness but that is also a higher spec machine than I'm used to dealing with.

Either way, your 3D printed coaches look excellent and I hope that my GNR full brake in N gauge comes out somewhere near that kind of quality. Do you rub your prints down at all?

Indeed, sadly it is extra to go with smaller layers, 100 is nothing extra in terms of cash, but layer lines are more visible like you know, and also close ups can be cruel and exaggerate the layer lines, but then again some paint finishes on Bufferstops projects well can certainly see the lack of prep work.
Sadly some don't seem to understand that, but maybe they should concentrate on their own efforts before judging others

I have tried I materialise once, I have to say I wasn't that impressed with the surface finish very rough ad needed a heck of a lot of cleaning. I didn't use them again after this.

Metropolitan Stock is now available again, and have sold 3, with revised chassis, to stop Shapeways breaking them.

I have some photos of the recent 3D prints, but not sure I will be posting them here.

Update with progress, its been slow due to on going projects customer projects mainly, and also down to my hands which are causing some issue with working, as I dropped the original print which shattered, as it's my Birthday soon, my other half helped me out to buy another this time from Shapeways, as I had spent my budget already on the project.

With disappointment comes re-working, and I have improved some areas of the body, to allow it better connection with each section and also roof strength, as well as changes to mounting the body to the chassis.

Bogies, have been built, purchased from 247 Developments fitted with 14mm wheels, and looking quite good.

Progress has been going well on painting the 3D print kit, I managed to get enough out my Phoenix paint to paint the coach, and I have now lined out the body as well, and ready for a bit of Varnish.

I still have to finish the inside of the coach and paint every single seat and fit them inside, along with glazing.

Sadly though the transfers may have to wait as sheet 16P from HMRS has been out of stock for some time.

IWR Oldbury carriages.

If you think back to a few years ago, a program called railway restorations where a railway undertook a restoration of a carriage.
My most recent project has focused on the Isle of Wight's Oldbury carriage. No kits available so turning to the 3D printers again. Thanks to the help from the IWSR's Carriage and wagon team, they have been filling in holes in the research where questions still remained.

So a year down the line, I have 4 carriages one of each, a Composite, All first, All second, and a Brake Second.

Well its a bit more than copying, a lot of CAD work, but more a lot of research which I enjoy, but in a way it is scratch building but it allows us to make things that are not available, especially in kit form. There is elements of a kit however there's not much really to build, more paint, add detail ect...

Another carriage body designed a few months ago, SER - South Eastern Railway
Family/First Saloon 172, Not many measurements or drawings available for this particular carriage so working from photo's of what's left and some helpful measurements and pointers by Bluebell C&W team I managed to create a CAD model.

This was printed on a development printer which isn't exactly fast taking 36 hours to print. I designed 2 shells an earlier and a later version where the side windows moved to the back of the carriage.

Very fine quality though. What's the layer height?

0.05 not super fine, but good results... Yes the printer has a rather robust Z rail.

That SER carriage looks extremely good, a very fine finish indeed. And the blue glass finishes off the Oldburys nicely!

Thanks yes I'll get round to finishing it one day, who knows maybe it will fit one of those hattons chassis.
Used to be a 6 wheeler but probably use a 4 wheeler as that's what would happen.

Yes Oldburys were easy thanks to the IWSRs help and guidence, especially with the stained glass.

Not posted in a while, been busy building my 3D printed range up, but as its kit building I thought I would show off this newish carriage shell, this is a SER Family / First Saloon based on 172 on the Bluebell Railway, originally a 6 wheeler, so kind of a project for using a generic carriage for a chassis, not too difficult, although need to add 4mm to the length...
