Kavster's Loft Layout
Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Ah, perfect. Some great idea's there!
I'll definatly impliment points 1 and 3. Point 2 is a good idea, but I was thinking about creating a scenic break between the green and blue tracks. That being said, that particular area will be tight for space, so I may actually go ahead and put a point in there like you suggest and maybe try and make it not as obvious/visible. I do like the idea of being able to get get out at both sides.
Point 4 also makes a lot of sense, think I just chucked that in there without thinking it through really.
In terms of the cross over you mention, do you mean to move the crossover that is just after the entrance to the docks, and push is further back towards the station and curves?

Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
I am no expert at runnability, so wont comment directly on your plan, but I do have some observations.
It's very straight/square - consider the largest radii you can for the corners, put the track nearer to the back to enable this, break up some of the straights with a gentle curve/s bend, round geographical features.
There are no features - bridges/bluffs/tunnels/hills
Consider were roads are with access to station/goods etc
Consider a 'dip' in board height to allow road/river underpass and a railway viaduct/bridge
Railways are flat, but the surrounding land tends to undulate!
You may not need to document the detail, but a plan in your head is at least needed to give a holistic design for infrastructure like roads (access/egress), buildings, contours, rivers, hills, cuttings, etc.
If you want long trains, then the sidings need to be appropriate in length!

Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Ahh sorry if I confused you. By crossover I meant 2 points to change tracks not an actual crossover piece of track.
I tried to draw it here. You can see the "crossover" from one track to another just using 2 points on the right.
On the left, the single point into the fiddle yard.
Going back to 3. I'd have left the red track (and the associated track that was already there) on the extreme left hand side where it was. I.e. NOT coming off the mainline at the station but rather round the back like it was originally.
Also the at the freight yard (upper left) I'd move the first point back / down by one piece of track then add the triple point so the entrance starts earlier giving you longer freight sidings. Thanks
End2end

Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
That configuration into the future fiddle yard would give you the option to turn trains
Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Thank you all for your thoughts! It's really helpful...
Yes, I will be adding some gentle curves for variety, but I'm glad you picked me up on it as I might have printed the track plan and just put it all straight haha!
I havent added any features as I just wanted to get the track design sorted first, but I will be going 'full out' on the scenics.
Roads etc are all in my head, again just not on the plan.
A dip is a good idea actually. I hadn't thought of that...
I think once i've got the track plan sorted, i'll be able to go into more detail with my thoughts on scenics etc.
And the freight yard comments are very helpful too. It's so easy to see when it's pointed out. But i'm blind to it when I look at it haha!
The radius I have put there was a worst case scenario. I'll experiment with the tracksetta's when I'm in a position to do so and then make the curves as large as I can.TimberSurf wrote: It's very straight/square - consider the largest radii you can for the corners, put the track nearer to the back to enable this, break up some of the straights with a gentle curve/s bend, round geographical features.

Ahhh, I see what you mean now. Thank you. I'll have another go at putting that into the track plan a bit later tonight if I can.End2end wrote:

Whcih configuration did you mean? The way that End2end has suggested? Forward in, reverse out the other track? (or vice versa)mumbles wrote:
Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Yes, the revised version which creates that reverse in - forward out, very handy!
Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
You'll not stick to the plan to the letter when it comes to track laying anyway but it us a good way to get a start of what to do. Once you have track laid out on baseboards it all makes more sense in the space and then you'll think, ah, this us where i want a road or a bridge and i need to move that bit to there!
Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
There is a pair of points just above the left hand pink platform. To my eye they serve no route or purpose so could be removed?

I'm a spatial learning. Written instructions always need a bit of translating for me thus the pictures.Kavster wrote:It's so easy to see when it's pointed out.

And if the point on the left was moved up by one piece of track it would elongate that platform too!mumbles wrote:There is a pair of points just above the left hand pink platform. To my eye they serve no route or purpose so could be removed?

I hadn't actually looked at the station before and also notice, the green track can be made longer to fit the platform on the left and also extend the platform on the right.
Perhaps being able to extend the platform on the left of the green track and mumbles idea introduced it could make both longer platforms the same length and the bay platfrom slightly longer.
Thanks

Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Yes. I think the entrance to the station needs a little rework for how trains come and go but its a a good set up. I think the idea of bays with multiple units coming in and out with through trains as well will be lots of operational interest. Id recommend a small single branch somewhere if you can fit it in to have the opposite end to that route. Maybe a small station at the back of the dock area, a single line, single bay platform?

Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Hopefully this will explain a bit better.
X - Remove these 2 track changing points completely (mumbles idea) - Allowing the left most platform to be longer at the top end. (I meant to draw on purple lines so you could see the platform extended)
2 - Move the passing loop points up and beyond/clear of the station platforms
3 - Move the passing loop points down
On the right
The GREEN line is where the bay track can be longer.
The PURPLE lines is the longer platforms
Hope that explains it more.
Thanks

Re: Kavster's Loft Layout
Wow, thank you!
I’ve had to pop out for a while, but I will sit down tonight and go through all this in detail and put it on the plan!
From quickly reading through though, I like the ideas very much!
Thanks again and I’ll update when I’ve had a chance to go through it all!
