Dublo 3 Rail Fishplates

Postby Wolseley » Tue Sep 13, 2016 12:44 pm

I have a number of items of Hornby Dublo 3 rail track that have damaged fishplates and a couple that have missing fishplates. Does anyone know if one of the currently available makes would be a suitable replacement?

My first thought would be to call Peco: they make quite a range of rail joiners for rail sections various, and have been in the biz long term.

Their code 100 type will fit...tightly and a real pig to do. You may also try the current Hornby ones but if they're to the same old 70's/80's design once fitted don't take them apart!

Failing both those you can run old HD perfectly well on Peco code 100 just add a third rail. Doing this opens up the possibility of larger radii but the longest point the pickups will span is the small radius SL-91/92 but *NOT* electrofrog versions or the pickups cause a short. Slips and three way points can't be used, not enough space to fit the third rail.

Thanks for the good advice, but that's not the way I want to go. I'm not trying to create a realistic layout, but rather I'm aiming to create a working display of Dublo 3 rail equipment, so Dublo 3 rail track is essential, even down to using a manually operated turntable (yes, I have one).

I bought a copy of Michael Foster's history of Hornby Dublo recently, and it arrived yesterday. I noticed a comment in the book (in relation to the part that dealt with turntables) that Dublo 3 rail track can join up to Marklin track, although the base of the Marklin track is slightly higher than the Dublo, so if you are doing this, the Dublo track would need packing underneath.

I would assume that this means that Marklin fishplates would fit better than Peco. I might try them first and see - there's a shop not too far away from me that seems to stock a lot of Marklin bits and pieces. It's not urgent yet though - until I try something a bit more adventurous, I have more track than I need.
