Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Thanks for your comments Paul, they are much appreciated.
You mentioned new angles, well here are a couple more shots, angles even I don't get to see, just the camera sees held at arms length!
Views of the line that runs behind the station and general lengthy shots of the station and surrounds from the extreme ends of the layout.
If nothing else, it gives a good idea of the track layout as I have no diagram of it.
Thanks again for looking in.
Jim.

In many respects it's a shame this is a fixture.
It would be great to see it and I'm certain if mobile would
be a star attraction at any exhibition.
As a result keep those pictures coming as the later lesser
developments continue. I said a long time ago this is one
of my favourite layout threads and it just get's better and
better.

I'd love some more details on that small shed, it looks suspiciously like the building I was trying, (unsuccessfully,) to model last year.

Geoff T; Thanks for your comments on Millsend being interesting enough to show at exhibitions,
it really is satisfying to know that people would be interested in seeing it in the flesh.
Unfortunately it is well and truly, a firmly fixed, stay at home layout.
Nickbrad; A couple of shots of the building, the dimensions are:
75mm x 48mm including gutters. Height up to gutters 35mm.
Base shows Harburn Hobbies, the green on the window and downpipe is the original colour
before repainting into something a bit more Midlland. Hope this helps.
Precast buildings are not really something I have on Millsend, but seeing this at the fair
I thought it really looked the part, so it's the exception on the layout. (And it was cheap!).
If I have a spare hour or two I may even cut out and re-glaze the windows.... maybe.

Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Thanks Jim, I envision needing to make a couple of modifications if I were to use one, with it being resin I don't know how hard that would be. Knowing it's a Harburn Hobbies building though I now know where to look if I do decide to go that route
Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Some of those harburn buildings can look really quite good I think. But also some look quite clunky to.
That being said that small hut on your layout looks just right, so bit of a good find there squire...

Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Not a lot of action on Millsend this week, apart from another 3D building
for the backscene. A small north light factory, representing the back of the factory,
scratch built using plasticard, layered to give a 3D effect and covered with Slaters brick sheet,
painted and suitably weathered to give a run down industrial look.
This is the first one I have scratch built and as they are quite easy to build, I will probably
fill in some more of the gaps at the back with these.
I am slowly filling in the backscene with buildings of various styles, rather than use a
printed background. I prefer the depth of buildings, even though only 3-5mm thick.

Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Well, it's been some time since my last update, nice weather and a short break being my excuse.
Here are a couple of shots of the latest ballasting, joining the bridge section with the already ballasted station area.
Just one section left now to ballast, the line passing the goods depot, joining the other side of the bridge section and
the opposite end of the station.
The other thing happening at the moment is the news that 'Millsend' may be a feature layout in a well known railway modelling
magazine, more of that as and when I know more. The ballasting has to be finished before we get to that though.
Thanks for looking in once again.

Jim, as you know, I am a big fan of this layout so I will look forward to its hopeful representation in a glossy mag. I hope it's not too early to congratulate you on its inclusion.

Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Thanks Paul, just need to finish the ballasting and tidy up a few little things and then submit more pictures, then
just wait for their reply, I have been given encouraging comments from them, suggesting finishing the ballasting to
show the layout in it's best guise. I have just received a low relief factory kit to fill another gap in the backscene, a
Walthers Cornerstone 'Centennial factory', which hopefully will become a flour mill, all being well, I will post a few pictures
as I build it.
The layout will still be an unfinished ongoing layout for some time, but all being well should be featured
quite soon. (I quite like Frank of Binns Road's surname?)

Hey Jim, don't make it too tidy, it'll spoil that worn '60's look !!
An inspiration to me ever time I look in.

Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
Thanks Bufferstop and Geoff T for your comments;
This board has now been given a lot more freedom, as the shelf that used to hold my destroyer
which sat just above the layout has been removed and the Destroyer has relocated to my sons garage.
I now have to bridge the gap in the retaining walls as before it could not be seen because of the shelf,
but know I have a 6/7ft wall to work on so retaining walls and low relief background buildings need to
be added.
The first picture shows the shelf on an old photo before the yard was ballasted.
The other pics show the space between the existing retaining walls at each end which now need to be plugged
and also the final section needing ballasting on 'Millsend'.
So my hit list of work is: Retaining walls, background/low relief factories etc. and ballasting.
That should keep me occupied for a while.
Thanks for looking in.

Re: Millsend Layout - OO Gauge Sixties Midland
I have pushed on with the retaining wall using Wills English Bond Brick sheets and some Slaters plasticard,
it was much cheaper to scratch build this walling than use the various kits available, this it so far after a
coat of Railmatch Bauxite spray. Just a couple of sections left to build to fill that final gap.
It will then be ready for a coat of grime to blend it in with the existing walling and arches and a few period
advertising posters to break up the expanses of walling.
I will post a few pictures once it's finished.

Just a couple of photos of the retaining wall now fixed in position after a good weathering to blend it in. The cappings will be
painted now its fixed in position. Just needs blending in with some undergrowth along the base and
also where it joins the Ratio arches. The height difference with the arches will also be disguised somehow,
but that's for another day. Now the ballasting can be completed finally on this section.
