I see what you did there! Thank you. I'm loving 40ft boxcars at the moment, helps with the 50's vibe.

Looks good. Why is the locomotive so much lower than the wagons? Is it to do with them being built to different loading gauges? (I know nothing about American railways so apologies for the possibly silly question!).

Thanks Skyblue. I think the camera angle doesn't help. The cab on the RS-2 is the same height as the box car. The bonnets are fairly low on these to improve visibility. The caboose is much lower than the box car.
American loading gauge is much bigger than ours. British is 9 ft by 13ft 6, and American is 10ft 6 by 15ft.

Such interesting shapes, the caboose (and such a splendid word!).

Thank you
. Not sure how I'm going to fit it onto my inglenook mind...

I think many of us are guilty of owning stock that doesn't strictly fit in with our layout's location/traffic patterns, (I have a Class 60 loco and some Mk1s yet have based my layout roughly around the Wisbech and Upwell tramway). However, it looks great and it's your railway, so if you feel like just shunting it in and out again, then why not lol

Thanks Nick. It is actually location and age appropriate, but I physically don't have the room on the layout!
But it wouldn't hurt to have it appear ever now and again

Ok, I really need to get moving along, yet another layout is going to be finished by the time I have the track fixed at this rate
I was thinking earlier actually, the caboose fits into the layout perfectly, It adds an element to the shunting puzzle as it needs attaching to the rear, regardless of position when it enters the yard

I've just noticed that you plan to set the layout in winter (don't know how I missed it) and that in the first post you mention snow. How deep/how much snow are you going for and what will you be using for it?

I doubt it will be finished any time soon nickbrad, you will have plenty of time to catch up! I suppose the caboose can be introduced after the puzzle has been completed, to complete the train.
Skyblue, I'm going for fairly substantial snowfall, a foot at least. I will be using Woodland Scenics Flexpaste and Fine Snow Flakes.
