First issue was in local newsagents today - Mallard £2.99

ideal for a bit of weathering or painting experience

yes, I picked up one today, a bit disappointing really. not bad for £2.99 but I'll not be getting any more in the series.

One of the front pony wheels fell off inside the packing on the way home, the tender has popped apart along the floor line. Not a patch of my Triang/Hornby release tender drive model.
The lad on the counter said "bet we don't sell half as many next week".

to be honest i am more interested in using the base as a stand when taking photos then the model itself

Had to look through a few in Smiths to find one without too many issues, eg glue marks, wonky parts (oo er),broken bits and paint splodges. Still had to strip my choice to correct a misaligned pony truck. Having said that, now that it's on my shelf, for £3 it doesn't look too bad.I'll prob get the next one which is a streamlined Duchess and then call it day.

Bought one today too, just out of curiosity. Looks like it was assembled by monkeys. Scratches, paint smudges, glue marks all on the side that wasn't visible, buckled wheels and broken and missing parts...this build quality would put me off buying anymore as a collector of them as static models. As it is a £2.99 bodyshell; I'll probably respray the shell and see if it can be made to fit a hornby railroad chassis when I get time, sometime

Saw one in my local smiths. looks like a crude copy of hornbys railroad model. not sure if all buy yan. may buy the military watch as issue 2 & 4 look good. lufftwaffe pilot & russian military watch

I don't think these 'models' can be classed as a serious contender to replace Bachmann or even Hornby offerings, however, there are about 4 or 5 of the intended listed models that would be cheap enough to have on a storage line on my layout as rusting decommissioned wrecks on which I could actually practice weathering without getting too upset, or broke, if it all went wrong.
Just like those other offerings, the LMS coaches, from another magazine, they are not for the connoisseur but offer cheap 'play' models.
Don't knock 'cheap' when someone can make something of them.

Can the body's be fitted to OO chassis?

If the Coronation is blue I would try to place my red Coronation.

The bodies could be fitted to working chassies but I'm not too sure of the durability. The plastic feels thin and flexes easily, you'd be better off revamping an old Triang Hornby model.
By comparison the cheapie coaches were a class above this.

I had a look at them in my local bookshop today and the quality was nothing short of shocking. Brake rodding all over the place and so on - my oldest loco is a 50 year old Triang 8F and it makes the magazine offering look as though it was built by the salmon that John West rejected.

These are static models and really should only be criticised as such. One is always told that tooling costs prohibit the release of many models. That said, how can these 'copies' be churned out for such miniscule amounts? Similarly the Hachette Mk1 coaches. Will the big boys one day come clean about actual production costs or will we be continually told that old line as to how expensive tooling is?

These locomotives are really bottom drawer quality, but no doubt many will find their way onto unused sidings or as yard fillers in sheds.
