Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
That Dapol track cleaner looks fantastic, might have to purchase one myself.

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Managed to grab a couple of hours in the loft today. Not a great deal worth photographing as it was fixing one of the point motor wiring (solder connection came loose causing no response from the control panel) and then spent ages working out how to cut a hole for the inspection pits to drop in. As usual not all went to plan as I have only just realised the depot building is directly above one of the supports! Why did I not spot that earlier? Anyway, thankfully the inspection pit is exactly the same thickness as my baseboards, so although it took a bit of fiddling around to cut it out, I did so without cutting through the support.
At least I will know how to do the second one now. Here is a pic of the first one fitted & wired in:
Two minor additions to the layout, a couple of white vans. One looks like it needs a wash as some joker has written "also in white" on the back! lol
I've bought the wood to construct the baseboards for my second layout First Avenue this weekend, so may be spending even less time on Chadwood in the near future although I do intend to carry on building whenever possible. Indeed I have the Knightwing fuel tanks to build for Chadwood already!

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
I have spent the last few nights making up the first of the backscenes for Chadwood, to finally hide the loft from view. I ordered the Gaugemaster Industrial backscene for behind the depot area and the Countryside backscene for the station side. (both from Model Railways Direct for £6.25 each)
After much deliberating I decided to stick the scenes onto the mdf backboards with 3M double sided tape. It was rather fiddly to say the least, but I am quite pleased with the result. Obviously once I have ballasted, the backscenes will be blended in a little with some bushes just in front in a few places.
What do you think?
Whilst I was admiring the scenery, 66405 popped into the shed for a quick check over.

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Hi Rammy,
Yes that back scene works very well. I think that's partially because of your high line which makes the perspective work nicely.
I wonder how well it'll survive held on by tape ? Not exactly a fortune so if it sags, or gets damp stains it wouldn't be expensive
to replace. I think I would have tried wallpaper paste on detachable boards - but then I've done lots of wallpapering during the
last 43 years of marriage !!

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Hi Geoff
Thanks for the comments.
I did consider wallpaper paste, but I read on another forum about somebody trying this and the scenes just developed lots of bubbles which didn't disappear like wallpaper does. The scenes are printed on a thick, almost vinyl, paper so I really wasn't sure about the best method.
Like you say, not a fortune to replace them if it all goes pear shaped!

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
I managed to grab another couple of hours this weekend whilst the kids were out, so I managed to crack on with the 2nd backscene. This one is fitted above the station side of the layout, so I decided on a simple countryside scene to contrast the opposite side of the layout with the depot in front of the busy industrial scene.
Apologies for the poor pic, but it was off my phone!
Off to DEMU on Saturday, so I wonder what I might end up buying? Top of the list really should be ballast I suppose although if there any freightliner locos or hoppers on offer then who knows!

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
HHHHMMMMM Just trying to work out whereabouts this actually is , I knew they were thinking about building on that big field at the end of Woods Road
I just didnt realise how far along they had got !
On a side note I wish my loft was habitable , kitchen tables can be quite limiting !

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
I wasn't sure my loft was really usable but I just managed to squeeze a layout between the beams.
Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Fitted between the beams & trying to dodge the drips of condensation .......
Good to see Chadwood on Page 1. again.

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Been a bit bored lately as I haven't been able to get on with much on my First Avenue layout as it is shut in the shed and the weather has been awful. Waiting for planning permission to hopefully to get an extension built which will include a study / modelling room which will allow me to bring the layout indoors.
Anyway, whilst sorting through some cupboards the other day I came across a Knightwing PM116 fuel/oil depot storage tanks kit that I never started. Therefore I have made a start on this to keep me occupied. When complete it will go onto the Chadwood layout (hence posting it here!) which may well encourage me to get back in the loft this year and get it going again.
This is progress so far. Next stage will be a coat of primer before any more assembly.

Very nice Dave,
I like Knightwing stuff, not cheap but well worth the extra.
I've spent a fortune on their spear fencing.
Nicely made up I must say.

Re: Chadwood - Modern 00 loft layout
Thanks Geoff.
I bought this kit a few years ago but never got round to making it. I was never too sure about these plastic kits but I must say I have been quite impressed with this one. That is probably because I finally realised I need to take time preparing each piece, sanding and trimming any flash left from the moulding process before gluing in place. This has made a big difference in the final quality of the product.
Will post more pics once I have started the painting and weathering.
