4mm interiors: furniture
Having decided to illuminate most of the buildings on my layout, it is apparent that bare cardboard interiors are a bit of a giveaway, and the lighting just draws attention to them!
Is it me, or is there a gap in the market for interior furniture etc? A cursory review of e.g. the dolls house market shows lots of activity at 1/12, 1/18, 1/24 and even 1/144 scales (lucky N-gaugers!), but nothing at 1/72 or 1/76. There is a very limited amount of 1/87 stuff (e.g. this rather twee US site: http://cynthiahoweminiatures.com/shop/i ... anguage=en - the rug collection looks good for $6).
I really don't want immaculate etched brass at £10 for a table and chairs or whatever, some rough and ready plastic moulding would be fine. And paper prints for carpets, wallpaper etc. A job for Dapol maybe? Anyone else know any sources?

Hi Steve H,
I found exactly the same problem and did spend a few evenings making some card furniture for a half-relief Metcalfe house.
I also spent ages making office furniture for a building I started, but gave up.
This lack of furniture is what has prevented me adding interior lighting to subsequent buildings as all it does it light an empty
box. Some I know have the curtains drawn, which would be usual in the evenings when lights are on, but looks odd at other times.
Any enterprising person who can make moulds could easily start a 'cottage' industry with resin parts ...... looks like at least 2 of
us would buy !! In my failed commercial building the interior included the stairs, stair well, landings, rest room kitchen, office
desks, storage cupboards and filing cabinets, and to be honest left much to be desired !!

also I find lots of stuff free for wallpaper from dolls house sites on the net, (its a big hobby over here) and simply scale it down to print it out, but I do agree there is a lack of furniture and cabinets for OO and Ho I have resorted to making mine from card in the same way as mike64 from wordsworth railway,

These people in the Netherlands do some lovely floor coverings (and also assorted "junk"), mostly for the wargamers...
http://www.realityinscale.com/epages/61 ... ccessories
Sadly it is mostly 1/35 or 1/48, though some is adaptable. And I mention it because it could well interest O-gaugers...
Geoff: I hear you! I don't have the time or energy to set up a cottage industry right now, unfortunately.

Surely for rugs and carpets you could find images on the Internet, copy them into your chosen picture software and then shrink them down before printing?

Photocopying has its place, but I was more impressed with the relief detail on the tiles etc!

The Scalescenes Terraced Houses Kit http://scalescenes.com/products/TO20-Terraced-Housescomes complete with a "Interior wall, floor and ceiling detail and a selection of doors, rugs, paintings, windows, curtains and blinds". I have a copy of the kit and these are really good.

Re: 4mm interiors: furniture
Fittings and furniture is certainly and area where paper and card are most useful. I fitted out a Directors Saloon observation coach (a mobile luxury room by any other name) almost entirely by borrowing images from various internet sites. Ikea had thumbnail pictures of the doors available for all of their fitted furniture, so finding veneers to do the compartment walls was easy. I carpeted the floor courtesy of an on-line carpet warehouse, large oriental pattern repeated twice the central table was a mahogany door resized and rounded at the ends, but the hardest to make and still not totally convincing were the dozen Pullman style chairs from balsa and card. I can see I'll be back to redo them one day. My station building is lit, but rather dim, it has a main entrance running from front to back, with a long narrow corridor forming a T shape to it and providing the only view in through an open end door which is almost at eye level. The wall directly in front viewed through the open door has a ticket office window with a barrier rail to protect anyone standing in front of it, the wall to the left has two doors and the one to the right is covered in posters scanned and reduced from a calendar with a representation of a timetable in the middle. Even poking the end of my flexi-cam into the door fails to reveal any more than I've decorated. The windows that line up with the two stuck on doors have frosting made from tracing paper. Apart from large glass-walled buildings it's difficult to do more than glimpse an odd item through traditional sized windows A vase of flowers on the sill makes it impossible to see more detail through many.
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Re: 4mm interiors: furniture
I've had a good look at Noch and most of it is for outdoor scenes - beer gardens, outdoor restaurants, garden patios etc. Some of it might be usable with a bit of a paint job, but if you look where the dolls house market has gone with this stuff, with choices of countries, styles etc. our beloved hobby is nowhere!
Really, in dolls house scales I could do a William Morris room with Tiffany lamps, Persian (not Afghan) rugs and Louis Quinze furniture. Next to a room with a current model IKEA kitchen.
I'm on the lookout for a shrewd Chinaman with a laser scanner and plastic moulding facilities...

Re: 4mm interiors: furniture
in some ways, i do envy my grandad and his G scale railway (even though it costs a fortune) he buys quite a lot of "doll's house" things, he bought some really nice wndows for his signal box, a luxury we as OO gauge modellers don't really have. however, if someone did make these, would i really buy them? probably not, as they would almost certainly be rather expensive. perhaps i might, after a few years of their release, search on ebay for a job lot of them (most of my ebay searches include the keywords "job lot ) but that sort of stuff is a long way off for me anyway, i am still fiddling aobut with track on a bare board
Re: 4mm interiors: furniture
Scalescenes also do a interior detail pack which can be used over and over again.luckymucklebackit wrote:The Scalescenes Terraced Houses Kit http://scalescenes.com/products/TO20-Terraced-Housescomes complete with a "Interior wall, floor and ceiling detail and a selection of doors, rugs, paintings, windows, curtains and blinds". Re: 4mm interiors: furniture
Model rail did have a how to article on creating your own furniture I believe it's the august 2010 issue. I do make my own interior furniture for my models I find the das clay quite good for toilets, baths and sitting room chairs.
Beds are a box shape made from card painted brown and a bit of felt glued over the top for the sheets with a card headboard. Same with wardrobes and chest of draws a small card box shape with a strip of card to represent the draw or door. EDIT Pillows are 1mm strips of paper rolled up and glued down.
I find the free oo gauge and n gauge railway posters with magazines quite good to use as pictures for the walls.
And round door handles can be made from thin plastic spures from kits cut at about a mm long and glued in place.
Also I put scale lamp shades around the led lights which hang from the celling to give a better effect.
A strip of cheap blue dish cloth makes good curtains
The rooms aren't fully kitted out but there is enough in each to convince the eye someone lives there. A bed, wardrobe and curtains will usually pass as a bedroom with no need for anything else.

Hi
Following on from the suggestion to use DAS clay in the post above, FIMO polymer clay is excellent for making small details, it also comes in a range of colours if you need them, though it takes paint well as long as you undercoat it. (The alternative brand is Sculpey but you don't seem to see it about as much in the UK, or at least not where I am).
I use DAS a lot for ground effects, but let it go off first as it shrinks (hard learnt lesson)!
