As you say soldering is the key... and with brass using the right sized iron... I do prefer to work in plasticard myself, but as the stock I model is only available in brass or nickel silver kits (if at all!), so I don't have much choice... I did get someone else to make up the first Tu47 who was used to constructing in brass, but that one I've done myself... and its come out better than the other one!!
These look very interesting and are good models well made. Who makes the kits :?: Its good to see some unusual prototypes like this.

All three are from DKModel based in the Czech Republic and imported direct... He specialises in HO standard gauge as well as covering HOe, TT SG and TTe (TT scale on 6.5mm track representing 760mm/2' 6" gauge) Czech prototypes. Bear in mind this is true TT scale, 1:120, not the British hybrid of 1:100!

No instructions as per normal with these sort of small time manufacturers, you have to work it out for yourself!

Is this like Hon3?

I presume you have or are building a layout based on Czech railway :?:

Are the kits any better than some UK one's i.e. did they go together well? I have to say that the Comet coaches shown here were pretty good but I am wrestling with an old DJH white metal kit that was not well designed. The later DJH kits are excellent but this old Caledonian Oban bogie is a real challenge. Could not be built by a beginner modeller, I am using scratch building techniques and modifying a Comet tender chassis to fit it to get the thing working.

HOn3 is HO scale with 10.5mm gauge representing American 3' gauge (HO= HO scale, n=narrow gauge, 3=prototype gauge 3 foot in this case!). HOe is European 750/760mm gauge using 9mm track... Narrow Gauge designations can get a little confusing until you know how they work!

The kits themselves are straightforward enough, but the use butt joints and you have to curve that front end on the loco from a flat section then solder it to the sides... A careful beginner could probably do it, but they would need some decent modelling skills as well... You have to make or buy an N gauge chassis to suit and then make mountings for it... I used a Kato Genesis chassis under it. Remember no instructions, you have to work out for yourself what all the bits are for!

Here's the layout:

At last I have managed to paint up and finished two of these coaches.

In the end I used a Railmatch spray can for the maroon on a red oxide primer. The roofs , ends and interiors were hand painted . I sprayed the chassis. Fox transfers used throughout for numbers, letters and the lining. Finally sprayed using a mix of Ronseal Hardglaze matt and gloss.

These are great!
I shall be getting the Bachmann R/C ones for my layout and using a few of them to swap bodies with my wartime brown bodies. I look forward to some maroons. I am quite fussy but when it comes to the tumblehome angles I cannot tell the difference between the current Hornby and the old ones. I see the length diffs though!. I do love Coachman's work on RM WEB. It is magnificent...but not me.
I will buy mostly the old ones because they are cheaper or the new ones because someone is selling them at old prices because they are soooo disgusted.

Hi I went onto RM WEB which I don't think is anything like as good as this site to find Coachman's work. It was hard to find and his blog was blocked by the site so I have yet to see it. I presume from his profile he is a professional model painter is that right :?:

Can you tell me how to get past the blocking?

Hi Jack,

Glad you got the paint sorted out - they look really good :)

I quite fancy a go at one of these... maybe in a decade or so!

Hi Ade thanks for your comments. If you want to make a start go onto to the Comet website and you can download their quite detailed construction plans for coach construction.

Some of the tips are not quite right though as I found when building these.

Best wishes,

Yes, he is a pro and you can also find him on the LNER forum. He was very ill earlier this year so is working/posting less but his work is exquisite and I would always use him as a reference if I was fussy.
if you can get in to RM Web there are loads of fantastic pics on his blogs.
(BTW, yours look pretty good too...remember Gresley was The Master, Thompson and Bulleid were apprentices)
