Batch Building Coaches New Pictures
I am trying to go,in my kit building where Bachmann and Hornby probably won't follow
I needed more coaches for my Woodford GC layout. I built one Comet coach kit, but took ages, so I batch built these four.
It was very tedious but it really saved time. Now on to painting and some filling of gaps

Re: Batch Building Coaches
Nice work - how did you find the learning curve?
Does everything you need come in the kits or did you have to source some parts elsewhere?
I think building in batches definitely makes sense and saves time.
EDIT: Do you have a layout thread btw ?

Comet are great with their kits its all there. But if you need any extra bit they supply anything extra bits they send by return of post!
The learning curve was interesting and sometimes boring, but I did improve considerably on some basic skills. It was also good to have all the tools etc, needed for the set task up on the bench just the one time, again saving time.
I have two layout threads, my exhibition layout Belmont Road, and my large 00 Woodford, both on the site under layouts under constrution.
Thanks for the comments,
Jack

Hi Ade,
Thanks for the nice comments. I am in the spraying stage at the moment and will post again soon on progress.
The Comet range is amazing isn't it there is no way that any RTR manufacturer could do all these coaches so its a kit builder's dream to give variety to any layout.

Re: Batch Building Coaches Paint Problem
Just a litle warning about Railmatch paint.
I have had a disaster spray painting these.
I normally mix Railmatch with thinners but as I had run out I mixed with white spirit - real mess and have had to strip the lot and took off some details in the process. Interesting some Humrol paint mixed in the same way worked out fine.

Ah, another person constructing in brass... seems few and far between on here... I'm in the process of making one of these:
Also the coaches:
And the railcar!
Brass kits can be quite difficult or quite easy dependant on the manufacturer... but very rewarding when you've finished... all your own work!!

Hi thanks for responding.
Your models look great can you tell what they are based on please?
Yes not many seem to want to learn the black art of soldering I suspect!!
So rewarding as you say but also frustrating, I took a course in scratchbuilding last January, it has enabled me to finish off some loco kits that were so poor that I had to make some of my own parts

Re: Batch Building Coaches a Paint Problem
They are all Czech Narrow Gauge prototypes, the top one is a Tu47 Bo Bo diesel, the second is a Bahm/u coach and the third is an M21 4 wheel railcar...
As you say soldering is the key... and with brass using the right sized iron... I do prefer to work in plasticard myself, but as the stock I model is only available in brass or nickel silver kits (if at all!), so I don't have much choice... I did get someone else to make up the first Tu47 who was used to constructing in brass, but that one I've done myself... and its come out better than the other one!!

I think you should stay away from white spirit when mixing Humbrol paints too. I tried that once and the result was a sticky blob with a sandy texture! When I mixed paint from the same tin with turpentine the next time it was just fine!jack richards wrote:Just a litle warning about Railmatch paint.

As I discovered but it is interesting that the Humbrol sprayed well.
