Random Layout
Random Layout
Following on from my baseboard thread, here is a rough layout plan:
It's a 6'x4' 00-scale layout, divided into three 2'x4' baseboards. The split/join lines are on the plan, and only go through straight pieces of rail to make it easier.
All curves are at least 2nd radius.
I'm going to expand on the middle bit a bit, but first I'll need to buy an Anyrail license.
And lastly, a few questions:
1: does anyone do points for 3rd radius curves? The curved point on the right of the plan could really do with being one.
2: any suggestions for expanding the middle?
3: any other suggestions/questions/comments?

Dont take it the wrong way but at least loose the silly circle that goes into the middle, what is that supposed to be for?Random wrote:Following on from my baseboard thread, here is a rough layout plan:

Also why not move the station so it is in the middle of both tracks rather than just to the side of the one?
What track have you used as a template, looks like a mix of set track types pieces and flexi stuff, some odd short bits in places that I couldn't quite figure out.

Not a bad idea, but it would push the rails further apart, so I'll have to check whether it still all fit on the board like that.smallman28 wrote:Also why not move the station so it is in the middle of both tracks rather than just to the side of the one?

I have quite a bit of both set and flexi track.
The odd bits up top are to fit all the points between the board joins. Don't want to have to cut points up!
The odd little bits on the right are because the points are 2nd radius curves and it's in a 3rd radius curve. Either I'll use flexitrack to replace both the short odd bits and whatever they're joined to, or I'll get an answer to this question:

Re: Random Layout
I take it then that the curve into the middle then was just to show the intended expansion but doesn't represent what you actually intend to do?
That was my point in asking

Re: Random Layout
Yeah, I was thinking some kind of shunting yard or something, but I don't really know how to design one, especially with trying to keep it on the middle board so I don't have to cut too much track.
Re: Random Layout
I don't know of a 3rd radius curved point. how about the following, it also incorporates the station in the centre of the two tracks and a very simple yard in the middle as an example.I thought it would look better than the curve

Re: Random Layout
That looks pretty nice, you wouldn't happen to have kept the file for it?
I've been mucking around with one of my own, but it hasn't turned out that well yet.

Yes I saved a copy. you can get the file here:

Thanks!
Re: Random Layout
What are your thoughts on one of these two variations? I've tried to remove the board crossings in the yard completely in the first, and tried to make them straight in the second. As I plan to have the boards come apart, I figure the one that keeping the number of rails that cross boards to a minimum is probably a good idea, and failing that, straight rails are easier to cut.
I'm not sure I'm really happy with either, the sidings in the yard are quite short in both.

Re: Random Layout
Ok, neither of those really works (the last one doesn't work at all).
I'm considering abandoning the inside sidings altogether.

Re: Random Layout
Hi there,
Building an OO tail chaser layout in just 6x4 is tricky. But if that is the space you have then there are options.
You might consider dropping the large siding at the top (that comes off a curved point) this will allow more room either at the bottom to have a "traditional" station layout or inside the double loop for longer sidings. Another option is to drop the double track mainline and go for a single track with a passing loop at the station.
There are a number of options but I would start with dropping the large outer siding as this is taking up to much room in such a small space

Re: Random Layout
If you can come up with a layout with an oval, station, and sidings which uses only straight rails where they cross the board joins (because it's going to be cut) I'd love to see it. Curves must be at least 2nd radius due to running some larger / more recent trains, and sidings need to be long enough for that too.
I put in the long siding as somewhere to store off a train with a few coaches (which is what I'll mostly be running). It's not really that long, considering that.

Re: Random Layout
Hi random
Your layout plan looks good but just wondering instead of having
platform between the loops could you not have at inner loop as first diagram.
This then might let you use 4th radius for outer 3rd radius for inner
with points to let you move between loops.
Then set of points from inner loop to a 2nd radius curve which may allow you to
branch off to sidings.
This is probably not practical hence why I've changed my layout so many times.

Re: Random Layout
Something simpler:
EDIT: Considering the access I'm going to have to the back of the layout (or lack thereof), and the fact that I'm starting off with manual point control, I think I'll have to (re)move those points at the back.
EDIT2: Hey, if I do that, I could cover the back and make it look less like an oval!
