A truly British Layout, constructed in France
A truly British Layout, constructed in France
This is my first attempt to post to a forum, so excuse any stupidities.
I have been constructing an "N" gauge layout based on BUXTON Derbyshire, between about 1948 and 1960. The layout is set up in a room 15ft by 15ft in an
old French farmhouse. I arrived here in 1999, but the present layout was recommenced in 2006.
The plan includes both the original Stations, Midland and LNWR, their approaches; the LMS Motive Power Depot, nowhere near finished yet; Gowhole Goods
yard which was on the Midland Railway Manchester Central to St Pancras High Peak line near Whaley Bridge.
The Buxton Town (Fairfield) backscene was all created on my computer, and has been applied as a multi layer system, 5 deep, to emphasise the depth.
The majority of buildings are produced by drawings made on the computer, then assembled; this is with the exception of a few Metcalfe card kits and
Scalescenes Roads and Pavements.
I attach a few photos, which could be a lot better, but my photographic expertise is limited, it's the eyes you know !
The layout consists of 122 points, 4 controller CAB CONTROL for all of the layout and 60+ sections. DCC,what's that ? (David's Computer Capability).
The basis for all layout construction was local knowledge in the 40's and 50's, and FOXLINE Publications, for which I have full admiration, they are excellent.
Constructive or destructive comments will be welcome. If any advice is required I feel sure I may be able to assist in some areas of the hobby.
The ICI Hoppers are all home made, and mounted on Grafar Sulphate wagon chassis. The rake is 10 vehicles as the normal 16 would be too long for some sort of realism on this layout.
I will be returning to the UK for 10 days, but responses are welcome.

May I be the very first person to say that this layout will instantly become one of the favourites on this site.
That is simply stunning.

Two points.DavidM wrote:

1 - I LOVE the fact you even remembered to put a ventilation shaft chimney above the tunnel. Genius!
2 - 10 days eh? Here's a lump of wood - build me a layout!

Hi
Welcome to the forum David. With a first post like that I'm sure everyone will be more than happy to see you add more. I too like the shafts, something I see every day on my way to work but have never been able to add to any layout I have built.
I would love to see more pictures, especially some at track level. Dare I ask, are you points motorised? If so, that's gotta be some control panel!
Cheers
Michael

If they aren't motorised you must have a good memory to set them right. Heh.
90% of my derails are caused by me forgetting... and I only have 3 points that I'm currently using!

Fantastic layout indeed, a lovely prototype of a fantastic location which almost saw the last heavy steam hauled freight in the UK. Simply stunning!
Gowhole though, the 4 track mainline should split either side of the down yard with the slow lines passing between the up and down yards and the fast lines skirting around the edge. Don't take that as a criticism, it looks fantastic as modelled and is just the Green Eyed Devil coming out of me in sheer envy I have a bit of a soft spot for Gowhole, purely for the characteristic island of endless freight between the main lines, and have planned it many times trying to squeeze it into a reasonable space. I reckon to get a true representation, you'd need 20' x 4' in N Gauge to include the crossovers just beyond the yard for Bugsworth 'Buggie' Junction where the main line goes back to close quad formation track.
I think if you modelled the footbridge which crossed the site, that would really finish it off.

Re: A truly British Layout, constructed in France
Most impressive, and N gauge too - good choice
I like the technique you've used for the backdrop - it gives a good impression of depth.
I think you've got a good eye for colour - there's a pleasing mellowness to your scenic work right across the board, with a hint of autumn it seems, nice
The pictures look like they're taken from the centre and right-hand end of the layout. Is there a left-hand end to see ?

I agree - It would be nice to learn more about how you control all this at some point.mumbles wrote: ...Dare I ask, are you points motorised? If so, that's gotta be some control panel.

I can't believe I'm about to make a criticism.
The second photo down, I'm not sure I like the lichen used for general vegetation. It looks a bit 'samey'.
It's an awesome layout, but I feel some different styles of trees/bushes would be greatly advantageous.

Cracking layout - do you have a track plan as I'm finding it hard to piece it all together?
