The Blue Line OO Garden Rail
Re: The Blue Line OO Garden Rail
The layout in the workshop will include a historic model dockyard. The ships will be slightly out of scale being 1/90 which is a bit smaller than OO guuage being 1/76. To give you an idea how it will look i have posted a picture of a unfinished ship and some rolling stock. In fine weather the ships could be displayed in the garden layout.

The exit from the workshop out to the garden layout has been made good using some filler on the inside and plastic barge board and foam sealer on the outside.

any news on this one?
Re: The Blue Line OO Garden Rail
The Great British Summer has delayed, progress on the blue line, but i was pleasently suprised at how well the the trains ran outside after only a quick sweep of the leaves off the track, and only using the rail joiners for electrical continuity. It should be even more reliable when every section of track is connected to the power bus. The power bus wil be 2.5mm and the dropers from each section of track at least 1mm. While waiting for conditions to improve outside i have started to research the layout of a South Wales colliery (Coegnant) which i intend to model as a stand alone layout which could be used with the Blue line in the garden and the rest of the time in the garage with the layout there.

".......The Great British Summer has delayed, progress on the blue line..."
Paul's putting people like me to shame with his astonishing progress.....
The secret is he's probably planned it a lot better than someone like me who does things 'organically'.

Hey, it's my railway, I'll run what I want.
Re: The Blue Line OO Garden Rail
Hopefully i will be able to resume work on the Blue line soon, during the winter i have been building an addon board to be used either in the garage as part of the indoor layout, or during our long hazy days of summer, as part of the outdoor blue line.
This addon board will be a model of Coegnant Colliery in the LLynfi valley South Wales

Looking forward to seeing further progress with 'The Blue Line' now that the warmer weather and longer days are almost upon us. It's clear from some of your earlier photographs that natural light and long straights really do bring out the best in OO gauge model trains and that's something I hope to aspire to. Let us know what problems you have faced and how you've overcome them. I would imagine that the task of keeping an outdoor line fully operational would be half the enjoyment!
Re: The Blue Line OO Garden Rail
Well theres good news and bad news with the Blue Line. The good news is that with the good weather i have been able to lay more track, i,ve laid almost half. The bad news is that my controller, a Bachmann Dynamis is totally useless outside, and not much better in the garage due to the garage having a clear polycarbonate roof. I have overcome the problem with the Bachmann dynamis by making a caddy that holds both the base unit and controller in close proximity and shades the infra red sender and receiver from daylight. This means that the Dynamis has now become a teathered unit but the signal strength is allways 100%.

Very good, and quite an interesting thing to do. Any progress?

Re: The Blue Line OO Garden Rail
Now that we have had some nice weather i,ve been able to lay all the track for the first stage of the Blue Line. At the moment i,m relying on the fish plates for electrical continuity but i did solder droppers to every section of track and soldered the fish plates on the sections with points. The next stage will be to solder the droppers to the power bus. Photos to follow shortly.

Here s the first pic since all the track was laid. it shows my Milwakee road eire built A-B-A units which are waitng for a set of coaches and my set of Soouthern pacific Daylight coaches which are awaiting a SP steam engine.[img][/img]
One problem that has arisen is trying to keep the sections of track on either side of the two hinged sections level. I,m going to resolve this by sliding the fish plates back when the line is not in use and the bridge sections are folded back and then when the bridge sections are in place i will slide the fish plates forward to jon the sections of track.
