12v Smoke/mist unit + fan contol Runs on Water

Postby End2end » Wed Jan 25, 2017 1:29 pm

My mind keeps wndering off to ideas about what else can improve, move or enhance my layout beyond the scope of just the trains moving and with that in mind I found this. Does anyone own or has anyone tried one of these units?
12 v Smoke effect mist unit with proportional fan speed contol -runs on water.

Looking for any comments, experience or suggestions on this product.

I've already asked the seller some questions:
Does the fan come with a fan grill/cover to save fingers or things falling into the unit through the fan? No grill on fan. It just stops if you touch it.
Can extra pipes be connected to the main outflow pipe to spread the smoke to sepearate outflow pipes? All the chimneys on a row of model houses for example and what is the diameter of the outflow pipe? Yes, the aperature is 22mm
Does the unit have an audible safety warning when the water is about to run out? No warning sound will just cutout when water to low.
Do the 2 circuit boards come in enclosures? No enclosures

I also found the original website with a video showing the unit in action.

I only know about one of my brothers kiddies toys. When it ran out of water, the mist stopped. You just filled it back up again. I hardly remember it myself except how it worked. Was a toddlers style train.
(I know it is not directly related. I was expecting such devices to enter the market though. Its actually been a while to get from toy to model).

Little ultrasonic mist foggers...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10Pcs-D20mm-Ultrasonic-Mist-Maker-Fogger-Water-Fountain-Ceramic-Humidifier-12V-/371740768349?hash=item568d79f85d:g:XzQAAOSwCGVX31Ul]

"Mist Maker" and "fogger" seem to be the key words.
Fog down a river, but not chimneys I suspect.

And of course, pure humidity for any material that might be affected by damp.

I only vaguely remember it so I will have to ask my brother next time I see him to see if he remembers it. He should remember it as he had to fill the thing with water for his kiddies!

Not seen him yet. Surprising as normally he comes up once a week or more.

You should search the Forum before posting questions! lol
This is one of my pet projects Alternate Smoke Generator animation. I have cracked the non harmful smoke version, but had limited success with the water one. These guys have obviously cracked it, but at a cost!
The electronics are less of a problem, its the ultrasonic device that costs a lot! (hidden in the plastic) . I tried a single unit, but I think you might need several to get the quantities of smoke they have! You could probably build it yourself, but would be at least half the price they charge!

I did ask my brother and he didnt remember them. The kids didnt still have them as they moved house a couple of times since. Only now reading this I noticed I had forgotten to reply so sorry for the delay. It maybe an idea to ask in toy shops to see if anything is available cheaply that one can canibalize for the parts.

Many thanks Mountain for the follow up.
I have been put off this idea by Emettman's point. :?

Well that's about 80% of my layout then.

Providing the surfaces that the mist comes into contact with are plastic, I don't think there would be too big a problem. We have a flame effect fire which projects the flames onto a curtain of mist in a very realistic manner, my party piece is removing a 1p piece from among the glowing coals. Once it's been persuaded to start producing it supplies mist on an industrial scale but I have never found any condensation on the surfaces involved.
