Using a GM500D relay as a GM500. Can it be done?

Basic electrical and electronics, such as DC/Analog control.

Using a GM500D relay as a GM500. Can it be done?

Postby End2end » Tue Dec 14, 2021 11:44 am

Can I use a GM500D relay in place of a GM500 WITHOUT using a decoder as point control will be DC not DCC?
I can't seem to find any difference between them except one is wired up to a decoder in the wiring diagram.
All connections on both seem the same.
Thanks

Hi
The difference between the GM500 and the GM500D is that the D version has inputs designed for switched feeds on the negative side of the board as decoders all provide a permanent positive and have switched negatives, while the standard version is designed to work with switched positive. The three diodes on the circuit board control this. So the D version is not a direct replacement for the standards one.

If you remove all three diodes on the GM500D and replace them with three wire links or fit three new diodes (1N4001) the opposite way around from those originally fitted, then it will work on a conventional feed solinoid motor.

Compare the two images of both types and note the three diodes being opposite way around

Broken? It was working correctly when I left it.
