Working roller shutter doors

Postby James109 » Fri Jan 10, 2020 3:35 pm

Was thinking of using a dc 5v-6v 70mm 2 phase stepper motor mini screw slider from ebay as the mechanics of a engine shed roller doors.

Anyone had any experience of this concept?

Sounds feasible Jim, I'd be tempted to use the sort of doors that bend through 90 degrees as they go up and lie horizontally, rather than a pure roller. You could also use an N20 format DC motor with screw and slider. They come quite cheap. I was looking at the roller shutters at the Evesham Vale miniature railway at the weekend. They have an overall roof which covers 3 tracks through the station and all of its walls are roller shutters that wind up and leave the roof sitting on eight pillars. A great way to secure their stock.

Was thinking of using a DVD\CD players stepper motor most come with 50mm of travel. For me ideally will need 70mm of travel so looking like if I can't find one will custom screw rod and 3d print slider. https://www.amazon.com/500mA-stepper-Le ... B014IGB9ZG

Using a stepper makes sense and tray motors are quite tolerant to being stalled by the mechanicals.

I saw a video recently of I think it was a new Fleischmann product. A small warehouse, the front roller doors open, a forklift comes out round the side, where another smaller roller door opens and the truck goes inside. The truck goes round the loop a few times, then parks up and the doors close. It may have been in a Gauge-master newsletter.
