Hi. New to this, so please bare with me if I get the formalities wrong.
My present problem : I have a Peco LK55 turntable together with a Expo turntable motorising kit.
The motor in the kit operates at 6 volts from a 6 volts battery pack. I want to feed the motor from
my layout 12 volts. The wiring diagram says I should add a suitable resistor to the feed line if I want
to use 12 volts. That's the problem. All the electrical shops I've been to usually deal in household electrics
and don't know enough about 12 volt DC to help me. Does anyone know what type/ref: no. of resistor that I need.
6 volt motor resistor
Re: 6 volt motor resistor
Hi
You will need a rather high wattage resistor and expect it to get hot too where any prolonged use may occur.
You will have to use Ohms law to calculate the resistors Ohm value
You will need to know the current drawn by the 6 volt motor. Ohms law is V=IR or for finding Resistance R = V/I. In your case 6 / measured Amps.
However using a resistor is really a poor method of dropping the voltage. Consider using a variable voltage regulator. Either a home built one using a LM317 and a couple of other components Example circuit or a ready made one from the likes of eBay etc.Non reversing PWM regulator

Or if you're quick...Maplin

Re: 6 volt motor resistor
You have to have a pretty strong reason for not buying the one on Ebay, I've bought motors and a voltage regulated supply on a bare pcb from these Hong Kong guys not had a problem.
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Re: 6 volt motor resistor
You need a dc-dc step down buck for as little as 50p each!
£2 gets you one with a readout
Worth the wait!
I have dozens

If you like doing DIY, then try this.

Not as cheap as buying Timbers ebay purchase but fun to make
