Just wondering what uses people have found for a Raspberry Pi with model train layouts?

If I may, can I point you to another members layout here on NRM using Arduino boards for your perusal?
And an impressive layout it is too. :)

I think the main use is to run JMRI or similar software to allow wireless control and other nice things that you can do with a computer. The Pi is really inexpensive and small enough to pop under the baseboard. The Pi 3 especially is a very capable device - just plug in a Sprog (speacial Pi versions are available or you can use an ordinary USB one), plug in an SD card with the software on it (available from Sprog if you don't want to mess about) and away you go.

Add a screen (I have a nice 7" LCD one) and keyboard (wireless is best) and you can control just about every aspect of your layout, and if you have a suitable Android or i-device you have a ready made wireless throttle too.

I have used Picaxe micro controllers (similar but cheaper than either Rasberry Pi or Arduino) to control servo motors at level crossings etc.
