I am wondering if there are any point motors that work in a similar fashion to the Tortoise motor, but at a lower price?
The reason I ask is I would prefer to use slow action motors for a number of the points on the layout I am planning, but the number I want is likely to prove expensive if I use tortoises.
Are there any suitable alternatives at a lower price? I would need to retain the detection function.

I know of two alternates Stephen:
First for reference, DCC Supplies lists the Tortoise at 14.00
1) Cobalt from DCC Concepts. About 16.00 from Gaugemaster
2) Fulgurex. Priced at about 10.00 at DCC Supplies
I confess I've never used Fulgurex so can't comment. I have used Tortoise and Cobalt and for my money it's going to be Cobalt. These are well designed , more so than Tortoise and easy to set up.
I cannot conceive of going back to solenoids.

If you have 12 or more points to do you can get a good discount with a 12 pack cobalts from Hattons
£135 for the basic ones (£11.25 each)
£180 for built in decoders (15 each)

I use cobalt motors - love them. Got a couple from an old batch that was a bit troublesome but it was about 2 years agon now so you shouldnt have that problem. Have a look at my layout thread (in my sig) for pics. Here is a lil vid http://youtu.be/nLAfuvpElpwurl

A new alternative has just been mentioned on another forum relating an article in Nigel Burkin's blog. Conrad's have brought out motor complete with polarity switch for £3.99 and with a limit switch for £5.99
