Lighting Help And Advice

Postby Dwarfboysim » Sat Jun 16, 2012 8:11 am

Hi all,
Well I have all the ballast down, point motors in, bus wire etc. Now I want to make a start on lights. I have purchased some of the Hornby Skale Lighting stuff to experiment with. I was also looking at the following on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... Track=true

Do you think these could have the Hornby Skale Lighting plugs attached to add them in? I am working on powering the system via my Select with it's 4 AMP PSU as I now use an Elite to Power the Track, Trains and Point Motors.

If anyone has any advice along with pictures of what they have done, things to watch out for etc with wiring that would be great.

Thanks,
Dwarfboysim

Hi,
So if I am reading the picture correctly if I wanted to add Skale Lighting plugs to these I would need to use 2 plugs per lamp post (being 1 plug per globe) and connect 1 Silver and 1 of the other wire into each?

Thanks,
Dwarfboysim

Hi
No,
You would need one plug per lamppost. Connect the two white wires into the plug and then joint the two silver wires together and insulate the joint with a piece of PVC insulating tape.

Hi all,
Apologies for the delayed response. The Hornby Skaledale Lightining gave me too much grief particularly with try to wire their little plugs. I have now switched over to LED strip lighting for the buildings but need to find a way to dull this down as they are VERY bright. Also looking for some double sided lamp posts running LED lights to illuminate the platform if anyone can provide advice.

Thanks,
Dwarfboysim

Add 1KOHm resistors inline to bring the light level down.
Thanks

On the positive or negative side or one on each?

Sorry, Positive side.
Also if you find some lights are just a little too bright (rather than very bright) you can paint them with clear varnish.

Just as a side note, I add a 1KOHm resistor to ALL my LED's so they limit the power.
Hope it helps.
Thanks

Or if you dont want to experiment with different values of resistors as above, how about variable dimming!

Have you tried Layouts4U? (No affiliation).
I used them for almost all my lights, and a good source for led strips, miniature plugs and sockets etc.

HI,
Is the colour code for the 1K OHM resistor you use BROWN, BLACK, RED, GOLD?

Even a picture would be great. Also does it matter which way they are wired on the positive eg which end closest to LED strip etc?

Thanks,
Dwarfboysim

See colour code here
The resistor can go either side of the LED, its orientation makes no difference
