Timbersurf's Competition Entry for 2018.

Have any questions or tips and advice on how to build those bits that don't come ready made.

Oooh! railwayjim, thats so close!!! But not actually correct.
So some more clues are needed

Project 1 Clue F
Project 2 Clue F
Project 2 Clue F
The two projects are different but share a common theme

Those "Cats" are nasty thing if they get annoyed.
We lived in Hythe when one at Fawley blew up. I recall
looking out of the bedroom window at a flickering orange
sky and flames some claimed reached 300 Ft !!

Guesses - none

Sheesh, no more guesses?

I am currently making working hydraulic pistons! :o
Also trying to work out how I can construct Project two and make it moveable and dismantlable. I told you it may be beyond me! I am also still struggling to find something in the real world that will look like something specific in OO land. I will just have to keep racking my brains till I can think of something suitable :x
I am also struggling with my new acrylic airbrush kit, is it me or does acrylic have poor coverage and take ages to dry?

I am currently trying to mix paint to get a realistic shade for rust, it may take a lot of goes to get it right!

Here are some more build clues for Project 1

Project 2 has got to the fiddley stage that there is little to show

Well I have made some progress on Project 2, to wrap styrene around the Helix protractors has taken days, gluing each bend, holding with rubber bands and waiting a day for it to set before daring to attempt the next.
Project 2 Clue G
Project 2 Clue G
The Hydraulic pistons are nearly done, I struggled with one that was too tight, it was a quality issue with my chinese cheapy styrene stock having wide tolerances! I had to sand down one inner tube to allow it to be a sliding fit in the outer.
Project 2 Clue H
Project 2 Clue H
Project 1 has stalled as I experiment with paints to get rust to "look" right.

Whatever other 'first' you get, you'll certainly get first for intriguing....

Testing of the fit of the hydraulics on Project 2 is done, accurate positions have been set with steel washers, so frame construction can commence.

I've still got no idea what you are making but it looks very good! I love the use of some unusual items for this!

Interesting. Bascule bridge? Umm. Not quite.

Cheers!
As a designer, its easy to specify all new materials and assume that all the possible production methods can be utilised (laser cutter, lathe, milling machine, 3D printer, etc , etc). But with a budget of stuff all, no access to fancy machinery and a willingness to compromise, your left with what's to hand/free and a need to do some lateral thinking  I could design anything in 3D and have it made, but the cost would be as high or higher than RTR/off the shelf (although certainly more unique) but where's the fun in that {I kind of do that for a living on a 1:1 scale}(not to mention my stinginess with money). Deploying the the little grey cells and conjuring up idea's of how to use everyday objects as the base for my modelling, is what "turn's me on". Each to his own :D

Bascule? Hydraulics and pivots, etc I can see the inference, but no.

Are we really 3 pages into this topic and we still have no idea what he's building?

Haven’t a clue what’s being built but it’s looking like very good modelling.

All these clues and still not getting it!
Both projects are very special!

Still applying about the 7th layer of paint to achieve full rust! on Project 1.
Project 2 had me flummoxed, I just could not find/imagine what to use that is small, to replicate the real element. So I have bit the bullet and against my better judgement will attempt to scratch build it. It may not work!
I will show pictures once todays glue sets, but imagine building stairs from scratch but in N scale! It's technically akin to that! P.S. after seeing how hard others have found it and an aborted attempt myself, I now buy ready made OO scale stairs!

Sorry for all the clue, I'm still clueless!

Regardless what you are making, it has been a very interesting thread so far. I can wait to see the finished models and best of luck with the scratch built bits (although I think it is fair to say there has been much of that going on here already!).

Well my test piece has worked out much better than I thought! I made a jig to bend the round bar plastic, I also made one from a PCB to use as the jig for drilling the holes. Having applied a lot of glue yesterday to fully weld them to the base, it was hard enough tonight for me to lance off the excess and get the back flush again. Now all I have to do is make another five of them to an identical standard!
